You may have seen pictures on the internet where only one object is colored while the rest of the photo is black and white. Before that, one needed a computer and tools like Photoshop and GIMP to achieve the effect. However, now you can do it easily with your smartphone.
Whether you own an Android or an iPhone, you can have one object in color and the rest in black and white with just a few taps. This effect is called color splash. All you need to do is download an app that supports this feature.
We’ve done the hard work for you. We will introduce you to a few apps on Android and iPhone that allow you to achieve the same effect.
Android Apps for Color Splash
Let’s start with Android apps first.
Color splash effect
Color Splash Effect is a simple application that does its intended job completely. The cool thing about this app is that it offers a Smart Color mode. When activated, the application will automatically detect objects and only add color to them. This mode is useful when you have objects in the background. That way the background remains intact.
When you open the app, you will directly get the option to choose Splash mode. However, sometimes, we need to edit the photo first. While the photo editing capabilities aren’t exactly in the app, they do exist. Simply select the first image. Then press the back button. You will be taken to the photo editor. When you’re done editing, tap the Splash button to highlight the desired colors.
In the app, first tap the zoom icon to use the pinch-to-zoom gesture. The photo will automatically turn black. Use the tools at the bottom to color the area. Remove excess color with Eraser.
Color splash
Color Splash Photo offers several features to bring out the colors in your images. For instance, you can adjust the brush size, undo brush strokes, blur your image, and even change the color of your subject.
After loading your image into the app, you will see that it has been desaturated. Tap on the Original option at the bottom and start coloring the desired area. Use the Brush option at the top to change the brush size. The Gray tool acts like an eraser.
Color splash effect photo editor
This app offers three approaches to highlighting your audience. The first mode is the normal mode where you need to brush the area needed to bring out the color.
In the second mode, you have many different shapes. The area outside the frame is gray or unsaturated and inside the frame you get a color splash effect. You can also invert the effect where the area inside the frame will be gray and the rest will be colored. To do so, tap the frame twice. Use the pinch gesture to increase or decrease the size of the frame.
In the last mode you need to choose from predefined colors and the same color will be highlighted automatically. To activate this mode, tap the color picker icon at the bottom.
Color Palette – Smart Color Splash
Here’s another cool app that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect colors in your images. You need to tap on the color to make it work. You can activate multiple colors with just one touch. If you don’t like the automatic color of the object, you can adjust it with the brush and eraser.

Photo Splash – Photo Editor
This application offers two modes – manual and automatic. By default, manual mode is enabled. You will need to color the desired area with a resizable brush. When auto mode is on, the application will detect the outlines of the object only limiting the color within it. You can even apply filters to your images in this app.
Touch color effect
This app is also a simple tool that helps to highlight objects in your images. Although the app doesn’t offer an automatic mode, the manual mode allows you to change the brush thickness and opacity. Interestingly, the application offers many gestures such as that you can zoom, rotate the object and do other things.
Color splash Lightroom effect
Similar to one of the Android apps mentioned above, this app also allows you to add color splash effects to your images using shapes. That is, the color will only be highlighted inside the shapes. When you launch the app, you’ll be presented with two options — Color Splash and Shape Splash. Choose the one you need. In Shape Splash mode, double-tap the bottom shape to invert the colors.
In normal color mode, you can change the brush size and opacity. Luckily, you can even undo the coloring without removing it.
Color your world
Depending on your creativity, you can create amazing photos with this effect. Since the focus is only on a certain part of the image, it is quite useful to highlight parts of the image when needed. You can use these cool images to highlight important objects and create a different effect.
