Apple iPhone takes Live Photos with the camera app by default. A Live Photo is a short video, but it’s a bit difficult to extract a still image directly from it. Thankfully, there are some cool apps available for that.
With the iOS apps mentioned in this post, you can extract stills from regular videos and Live Photos. The only downside is that you might have to sacrifice quality a bit. On the other hand, these FHD photos are easier to extract. Besides the app, we also have convenient workarounds that don’t need the help of a third-party app.
So, if you want, here are some apps that allow you to extract stills from videos on your iPhone.
Take a photo
Grab Picture is a simple app with an uncomplicated approach. It allows you to delete videos by one frame or five frames, thus making it easier for you to find the perfect frame. When you’re done, just hit the Save button, and that’s it.
It doesn’t have any additional frills, meaning there’s no option to choose image quality or format. It simply saves FHD photos on your phone. In our tests, the average photo measured over 1MB and had decent detail.
Grab Picture only works for videos, not live photos and is provided for free.
Simple setting frame
If you want to extract frames from live photos and videos, Frame Grabber is the app for you. It has slightly more advanced features than the one above. For one, it allows you to adjust the scrubbing speed. Second, you can choose between HEIC and JPG formats and choose the compression quality. For our tests, we kept it at 100%.
Like above, extracting a photo is super easy. Once you have imported the live video or photo, select the frame and click the Share button.
A tap on the little Clock icon on the right lets you choose the speed, while all the settings are hidden in the three-dot menu at the top. The photos are decent and like the one above have FHD resolution. Frame Grabber is available for free on the App Store.
Easy video to take pictures
Easy Video to Photo works the same way as above. However, it has one big advantage. Firstly, it allows you to extract up to 7 frames at a time. Select a frame and tap the 7x icon to save 3 frames before and after it. This way you can choose the best from the lot and delete the rest.
The app also has the option to choose the image format and quality. Alternatively, you can choose to keep or delete location and date data. The latter is especially important if you don’t want people to find out where and when they took the photo.
Image quality is decent. And while it may not have the sharpness and resolution of regular iPhone photos, it gets the job done if you have to share the photo on social media.
The interface is quite simple and all the options are right on the homepage.
Built-in workaround
So far, the methods and applications described above allow you to get video frames of your choice, but the extracted image is not the most detailed. If you want most of same image quality, thankfully, there is a small workaround.
For live photos
Open Photos directly from the Photos app and tap the little Edit icon in the top right corner. Next, tap on the small circle icon at the bottom. This will display the timeline of the mini video.
All you need to do is select the frame of your choice, tap on Make Key Photo and hit the Done button.
This step will change the thumbnail on the Photos app.
Next, tap the Share icon and select Duplicate Photo > Clone as Still Image from the Share Sheet. There you have it—a high-resolution photo frame from a Live Photo.
For Videos
Unfortunately, the road is not simple for official videos. However, you do get a workable frame if you want a photo for an Instagram Story.
In the absence of a dedicated option, here you will have to go with the old way of taking screenshots. The advantage of this method is that you get high resolution videos (compared to third party apps).
However, to get started, open the video and click Edit. This will make it easier for you to go through the video. Once you’re in the right spot, take a screenshot.
Click the screenshot to remove all unnecessary elements. Simple, right?
Keep it short and simple
Although videos tell the whole story, they are very time consuming. So if you want a short story, save the screenshot and share it with friends and family. Third-party applications simplify the work. However, you will have to sacrifice all quality for that.
