How to Fix Overview Selection Not Working on Android 9.0 Pie

Google has introduced some interesting features in Android Pie. One of them is the Overview Selection. It happens to be one of the underrated features of Android 9.0 Pie and is present in the Recent Apps screen, aka the Overview screen.

This feature allows you to copy text and images from the app preview in the Overview screen. You can also use Google Lens to identify images or search for similar images.

However, sometimes this feature does not work. If you’re having this problem and Overview Selection isn’t working on your device, here are some ways to fix it.

Using Android 9.0 Pie

Overview Select will not work if you are trying to use it on a version of Android other than Android 9.0 Pie. This feature is part of the Pie update and is not compatible with previous versions.

Own a Pixel device

Sadly, this cool feature of Android 9.0 Pie is currently limited to the Google Pixel series — Pixel, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, and Pixel 3 XL. Yes, unless you own a Google Pixel phone, this feature won’t work for you. It doesn’t support any other devices, even those running the Android Pie update.

Activate Option Overview

While this feature is usually enabled by default, you should check to see if it is enabled. The setting to do that is in Pixel Launcher. So, if you are using a launcher other than Pixel, switch to Pixel Launcher and then follow these steps.

Note:

Step 1: Once you’ve enabled Pixel Launcher, tap and hold on the home screen. Then choose Home settings from the pop-up menu.

Step 2: In Settings, tap Suggestions. On the next screen, make sure the Overview Selection option is enabled. The switch should be blue. In case it’s off, flip the switch to activate the feature.

Activate the action service

Another thing that you need to check is if the Action Service is enabled. If it is disabled, the Overview selection will not work.

To enable it, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open Settings on your device and go to Apps & notifications. Tap See all apps.

Go to Apps and notifications in Settings. Here, select the Action Services app and tap on Archive. Under Storage, tap Clear Cache.

Clearing cache is different from clearing data and it won’t delete any important files or settings from your device.

Similarly, go to Pixel Launcher in Apps and notifications in Settings. Then tap Storage and tap Clear Cache.

Change system language

If the Overview selection still doesn’t work even after trying all the fixes above, you need to change the language of your device to English (US). Here’s how to go about it.

Extra tip: Use overview selection to extract text from images

We usually download third-party apps to extract text from images. But thanks to this new feature, you can now do it easily without any app.

Here’s how to go about it.

Step 1: Open the image from which you want to extract the text.

Step 2: Go to the Overview screen using the Recent Apps button or the newly introduced gestures.

Step 3: Long press on the text in the image. You’ll get the usual text selection options — Copy, Search, and Share. Select Copy or Share.

Furthermore, if the text contains a recognizable element like a phone number, URL, email address, or physical address, you’ll see relevant apps in the selection options.

For example, in the screenshot above, I selected an address in the image. You will see that Google Maps shows up in the selection option.

Bite a piece of cake

Overview Selection is one of the many exciting features of Android 9.0 Pie. This latest Android update includes new additions on top of Android 8.0 Oreo. The Smart Select feature was first introduced in Android 8.0 Oreo among other functions. The Android Pie update takes it to another level by keeping the feature in Overview mode.
