You love Slack. We love Slack. Everyone loves Slack. At least, all the people I know use it, that’s a lot of people. Slack is the newest team-based communication tool, right behind GroupMe and Hipchat. But by far, Slack is the fastest growing thing. The Slack icon has found its way to many Docks over the past year, and thus, to our hearts. Speaking of icons, it looks like the Slack founder is well on his way to becoming an icon.

If you’re using Slack, I’m sure you’re using it a lot, it’s really the only way. If you’re using a Mac or Windows app, the keyboard shortcuts listed below will help you get things done faster.

Speaking of keyboards: Check out our ultimate guide to keyboard shortcuts for the most common services to save 10-20 minutes of time each day.

1. Quick converter

The Slack app comes with a Spotlight-style Quick Switch. Bring it up by pressing Cmd + CZK on a Mac or Ctrl + KY on Windows. Pressing this shortcut brings up the text field. Type the first letters of a group chat, channel or individual chat and the option will be highlighted. Press enter to switch to that conversation.

In practice, if you’re running a lot of teams, this will be insanely fast when compared to using the old point-and-click operation.

2. Press Up Arrow to Edit

It will happen, you will type something wrong. To quickly return the last message you sent back to the text box, just press the . button Upward arrow key.

3. Format key

Put your text in *asterisk* for bold, _underscore_ for italics, `severe’ for code, and start the line with a “>” to make it a block quote. The format in Slack is similar to Markdown.

4. Incision

In any text field, type a forward slash to display multiple options. After typing a slash in any of the specified commands, hit enter and you’re good to go. Here are some examples of how it works:

5. Mark messages as unread/read

If you’ve read something but want to process it later, simply mark the message as unread (a better system would be Star a message). Click on the message while holding replace key. On mobile apps, you can use touch and hold.

Also, Exit marks messages in the current thread as read while Ca+Ec do it for all messages in Slack.

6. All Shortcuts

On a Mac, press cmd + ? (Ctrl + ? for Windows) to display a list of shortcuts for the application.

Bonus: Professional Search Engine

Slack supports operator-based search in its apps, just like Evernote. In Slack, these are called “modifiers”. You can prefix search queries with these modifiers to narrow the results and get to where you want them faster.

If you’ve been using Slack for a while, you’ve probably had thousands, if not hundreds, of thousands of messages exchanged. Using a search modifier like a specific person’s name, channel, or time frame is certainly helpful. Check out the help page for more information.
