Thanks to WhatsApp’s new privacy tools, you no longer need to explain the last time you saw a late night to your friends or family members. You can now hide your last seen from specific WhatsApp contacts. Before that, you had options to share the last view with everyone, no one or only contacts. The same ability to hide from selected nasty contacts was missing. The company is finally catching up to the competition and allowing users to hide their last online status.
If some nosy contact asks you about your late-night presence on WhatsApp, you can always remove them from your contact list and stop sharing your last seen status. But that’s not an ideal solution. Instead you can use the steps below and hide seen from selected contacts on WhatsApp.
What happens when hiding last seen from specific contacts on WhatsApp
The only way to prevent people from seeing the time you were online is to choose different options for Last Seen. You can choose to hide from all contacts or select contacts. However, if you choose to hide it from everyone, no one will be able to hide it the last time you were online on WhatsApp, even if they weren’t in your contact list.
One of the basic things WhatsApp does is that if you hide your Last Seen status, you can’t see the same for contacts. That said, your contacts and you can only see each other’s online status while online without any timestamps attached. Hiding your Last Viewed status does not affect any other WhatsApp features. Your contacts can see your WhatsApp Status, WhatsApp Stories and can even make audio/video calls or message you directly. To prevent people from bothering you about your time online, you can also block them and they won’t be able to see your Last Seen status, WhatsApp Status, call or message you on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp for iPhone
WhatsApp’s iPhone has an option to hide last seen from specific contacts buried in the settings menu. Go through the steps below to make changes.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on iPhone.
Step 2: Tap the Settings gear in the bottom right corner.
Step 3: Select the Account menu.
Step 4: Tap Privacy.
Step 5: Select Last Viewed. You will see four options there:
- Everyone: Share your last seen status with everyone (even with people not on your contact list). We strongly recommend avoiding this option for your privacy.
- My Contacts: Most users use this option. It will only share last seen with your contacts.
- Except My Contacts: Hide last seen from specific contacts.
- Nobody: No one can see your last seen status.
Step 6: Tap My Contacts Except.
Step 7: It will open the contact list on WhatsApp.
Step 8: Tap the radio button next to the contacts you want to hide the last time you saw them.
Step 9: Press the Done button in the upper right corner and select the last unseen contact you saw on WhatsApp.
Then none of your contacts can see your Last Seen status. The flip side of this setting is that you won’t be able to see their Last Seen status either.

Whatsapp for Android
WhatsApp for Android offers a different interface than the official iPhone app. So the location of the Settings is different, but the name of the option is still the same. Follow the steps below to make changes.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on Android.
Step 2: Tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner.
Step 3: Open the Settings menu.
Step 4: Click on Account.
Step 5: Select Privacy.
Step 6: Click Last Seen.
Step 7: You’ll see four familiar options to choose from (the ones we discussed above).
Step 8: Tap the radio button next to My Contacts Except.
Step 9: Select the contacts from the following menu (the ones you wanted to hide were last seen).
Step 10: Click the check mark in the lower right corner.
From the privacy menu, you can see how many contacts you excluded when checking your last view.
Stay away from prying eyes
WhatsApp has finally addressed the security holes and offers an option to hide the last seen profile picture and about specific contacts. Go ahead, use the tricks above and your mom will no longer ask about the last time you saw 4am on WhatsApp.
