Method 1. Add an exception to bypass Do Not Disturb mode
Contacting someone when their iPhone is on Do Not Disturb (DND) is an impossible task because it blocks all notifications. However, there are some workarounds available. Adding your contact as a DND exception or an emergency contact can help you reach them without restrictions.
On iPhone
Step 1: Open Settings
Step 2: Here, tap on Spotlight.
Step 3: Tap ‘Do Not Disturb’.
Step 4: In the Allow notifications section, tap People.
Step 5: Here, select ‘Allow notifications from’ and tap Add.
Step 6: Use the search bar to find the relevant contact and tap it from the search results.
Step 7: Here, tap Done.
The contact has now been added as a DND exception, which will allow you to call the user regardless of whether the device has DND enabled or not.
On Android phones
Step 1: Open Settings.
Step 2: Here, tap Notifications.
Step 3: Then tap on ‘Do Not Disturb’.
Step 4: Tap on ‘Calls & Messages’.
Step 5: Here, click on the + icon above Add contacts.
Step 6: Use the search bar to find the contact and tap it from the search results.
Step 7: Once added, tap Done.
You can also repeat these steps to add more contacts as exceptions in your device’s DND settings.
Method 2. Use Find My to wake someone up if their phone is on silent mode
You can also use Find My on your iPhone or Android device to wake someone up. Let’s see how to use it as an alarm.
On iPhone
Note: Make sure Find My is enabled and the device is added to your device list before proceeding.
Step 1: Open the Find app.
Step 2: From the menu options, tap Devices.
Step 3: Here, tap on the relevant device from the list.
Step 4: Tap Play Sound.
This will play a loud sound on the selected device and allow you to wake someone up even if their phone is on silent. You can repeat this until you are sure that the other person has woken up.
On Android
Note: You will need to have access to the account details of someone else registered with the Android device in question to use this method.
Step 1: Open the Find My Device app.
Step 2: Here, tap on ‘Sign in as guest’.
Step 3: Enter the email ID of the user you want to wake up and tap Next.
Step 4: Here, enter your password and tap Next to complete the login.
Step 5: Select the device and tap Play Sound.
Step 6: Click Stop Ringing if you want to stop the sound before the 5 minutes are up.
If not stopped, the sound will play for the next 5 minutes, unless another user mutes it by pressing the power key.
Method 3. Set Up Emergency Bypass on iPhone
The iPhone’s Focus Mode and Focus Filter can be of great help in reducing distractions, especially when you’re doing something that requires concentration. However, we often forget to set the end time or turn off these modes and filters. This can result in automatically rejecting calls, texts, and other communications when the device is active to keep itself distraction-free.
To make sure this doesn’t happen, you can enable Emergency Bypass on your iPhone. This will allow you to wake someone up with a text or call, no matter what mode the device is set to.
Method 4. Use a third-party app to wake someone up
Some third-party apps like Galam let you set up alarms for friends, emergency alerts, and group reminders. This can be extremely helpful if you’re trying to wake someone up but they’re not picking up your call. Here’s how to do it.
Note: Before starting, make sure both devices have the Galam app installed and signed in.
Step 1: Open the Galam app.
Step 2: Here, tap the + icon.
Step 3: Tap New Alarm.
Step 4: Here, tap Others.
Step 5: Tap the contact for which you want to set the alarm, then tap Next.
Step 6: Now use the options to set the time, date, ringtone etc for the alarm.
Step 7: Once done, tap Save.
The alarm will sound to other users at the set time. Alternatively, you can also use other third-party apps like Wakie Chat (for Android and iOS) and Air Horn & Police Siren (iOS only) to wake someone up over the phone.
