Windows 10: Use Virtual Desktops to Increase Productivity

Use Windows 10's New Virtual DesktopS

Spaces is my favorite feature on Mac. Now, Windows has actually started using virtual desktops in Windows 10. Sure, there are already third-party apps that let you do this but the native features make a big difference. First, millions of users around the world can easily access this functionality. Two, it is tightly integrated with the operating system.

I think virtual desktop (or mission view as Windows calls it) will be a great productivity boost. Read on to learn more about it.

Use and create virtual desktops

In Windows 10, you’ll see a new icon on the taskbar, right next to the new Cortana search bar showing two cascading windows. This is mission view button.

Now you will see a black bar that will show all the current virtual desktops or will ask you More desktops. The previews you see here will be live streamed so you can see which windows are part of which desktop.

Shortcuts: You’ll of course want to quickly switch between virtual desktops. Use keyboard shortcuts Windows + Tab to switch to transition view. The current window will be highlighted. Press Navigation again to switch to Mission View then select the desktop you want.

To move an application window to another desktop, go to mission viewright click on the thumbnail and select Move to > desktop.

While the desktops are different, the taskbar remains the same. So when you see a line below the icon on the taskbar for an active app, it means that app is open on another screen and you can click the icon to go to it. there.

What is it good for?

Virtual desktops are great for specifying different environments for different types of activities. You can have a desktop just for email and communication, for work, for personal items, etc. This way you won’t mix things up.

Reward: Window Manager

Windows 10 also brings better window management. Now, when you dock a window left/right (by dragging it to the edge or by using the keyboard shortcut Win + arrow keys), Windows 10 will automatically show you the remaining windows on that desktop. You can simply click on one and it will take up the rest of the screen.

This makes multitasking very easy.

Honestly, Windows 10 has a long way to go to compete with OS X Spaces, which in itself isn’t the best it can be. Currently, there is no quick and easy way to move a window from one monitor to another. You also cannot have different backgrounds for different virtual desktops. But we are still quite far from the official release. Hopefully those issues will be resolved by then.
