How to Extract High-Quality Still Images from Video on Android

Despite the many improvements in camera-related technology, the editing suite still lacks advancement in most smartphones. There’s not much you can do with it except exploit a few basic filters and editing tools. Guess my frustration at not being able to extract a simple image (or frame) from the stunning 4K footage I shot with my Android phone.

Here, you could argue that instead of going any further, one could also take a screenshot of the video. If you have achieved this feat earlier, you must know by now that the resulting image is not commensurate with the video quality. These images are often blurry, fuzzy, and lack detail. Definitely not something you want to post on Instagram or Facebook.

Fortunately, with high-resolution videos, one can extract still frames easily. Since high-resolution videos capture more information, the captured frames are detailed, sharp, and of higher quality to work best for your social accounts.

Let’s first start with using the built-in features to extract stills from video.

Some Android devices have a built-in feature to extract still images from videos. Let’s see how it is on our OnePlus device. All you need to do is tap the capture icon while the video is playing. The captured image will then be stored in your gallery without any loss of quality.

Furthermore, you can also extract still images while recording videos on your Android device by pressing the capture button. The quality will also not decrease in this method.

This can be especially helpful if you’re conflicted between taking a still photo or recording a video of the scene – you can take a photo while recording a video instead!

However, if such inbuilt features are not available on your Android device, you can always use some third-party apps to get the job done.

The best third-party app to capture high-quality stills from video

There are a number of third-party Android apps that also allow you to get stills from recorded videos. In this article, we have selected two of them that do it perfectly. Furthermore, these apps are light in file size, so you don’t have to worry about installing new apps.

1. Video to Photo Frame Grabber

As its name suggests, Video to Photo Frame Grabber is a simple app and a long standing one in the field. The key point of this app is that it can capture multiple frames from a single video.

This application has a simple interface. All you have to do is select a video from your gallery and tap the Camera icon in the bottom left corner. It may take some time for the image to appear. In addition, you can select the shooting area and zoom in on a specific object.

Furthermore, you can adjust image settings such as the resulting file format, image quality, and image size. Undoubtedly, modifying the Image Quality parameter makes a big difference to the output file. In my case the default quality shows a 700kb file from a 4K video and when switching to Best quality produces a 4MB file with all details intact.

The good thing is that Video to Photo Frame Grabber creates separate folders for every video on the phone gallery. This app comes with ads and there is no way to remove them.

2. Convert video to image

Video to Image Converter works similar to the above application with the only difference being that it allows you to edit photos after taking them. The shooting part is similar. Tap the Camera icon in the top right corner and you’re good to go.

Once you’ve selected all the photos, tap Done. To edit photos, long-press the captured frames and tap the edit icon at the bottom.

The Video to Image Converter defaults are slightly better than the Video to Photo Frame Grabber app, with the default frame size being over 1MB for 4K videos. My only complaint is that the landing page looks pretty outdated.

It also has some other features like an image editor and slideshow maker. However, they are quite basic. Instead, you can use a dedicated photo editor like VSCO, Snapseed or PicsArt.
