The Apple Watch is an accessory that complements the iPhone in many ways. It can track your workouts, send notifications, and even run third-party apps. Of course, the main function is to collect health data when you are exercising. And since the Apple Watch is water resistant, you can even wear it while swimming.
However, it’s important to note that the Apple Watch is water resistant and waterproof. This means that if water gets into the watch, it can damage the internal components. Therefore, you should push water out of your Apple Watch every time it gets wet. There is a built-in option on the Apple Watch that can help you.
Why you should push water out of Apple Watch
The Apple Watch does a great job at tracking swims. It can give you data on the number of laps, the time taken for each lap, etc. Although it is safe to wear the Apple Watch while swimming, some water will enter the watch through the holes in the chassis. The main entry point is the speaker grille hole on the watch.
As we all know, water can damage the circuit, which can happen on Apple Watch despite being water resistant. Also, be aware that water resistance just means it’s harder for water to get into the device. It is not guaranteed to be completely waterproof. So you need to push water that may have entered the Apple Watch as quickly as possible.
What happens when you don’t push water out of your Apple Watch
If water remains inside the Apple Watch and comes into contact with the internal components, the water can begin to corrode the electronic devices. This can damage some of the electronic components inside the Apple Watch. As a result, some parts of your Apple Watch may stop working, such as the battery or speakers.
The worst case scenario is that your Apple Watch may stop working completely.
How to push water out of your Apple Watch
Thankfully, Apple has included a water push feature in the Apple Watch. Here’s how you can use it.
Step 1: Remove the Apple Watch from your wrist and place it on a flat surface like a table.
Step 2: Unlock Apple Watch by entering your PIN.
Step 3: Swipe up from the bottom of the Watch Face to reveal quick transitions.
Step 4: Scroll down by the digital crown and find the water spray function represented by the water drop function.
Step 5: If you can’t see this option in the quick toggles, tap the Edit button at the bottom, then tap the ‘+’ icon above the waterdrop icon. Then select Done.
Step 6: Now that you have the option, tap it. This will activate the sprinkler mode.
Step 7: In this mode, keep turning the digital knob in any direction and the Apple Watch will begin to push the water out by making a sound.
Step 8: Once done, you should see a prompt on your Apple Watch and the water has now been ejected.
Step 9: Use a dry cloth to wipe the outside surface of Apple Watch.
If you feel like all the Watch doesn’t push the water out in one go, repeat the process. You can also enable it before you go swimming, as it locks the touch screen on your Apple Watch, thus preventing accidental touches.
How does this work
If you notice, the water push mode on the Apple Watch will make a certain sound and also cause the watch to vibrate. The sound you hear is a high frequency sound that is used to make the speaker vibrate continuously. This high-frequency sound pushes water molecules that accumulate on the Apple Watch speaker grilles out.
These vibrations last only a few seconds but are effective enough to push the water out. You can find similar implementations from FixMySpeakers that use the same principle to try and push water that may have entered your smartphone through the speaker grille.
It’s also a great way to sweat out if sweat gets into the speaker of your watch while you’re exercising. However, we cannot confirm if this is a 100% working solution for your phone or other devices.
Protect your Apple Watch from water damage
Like any other waterproof electronic device out there, Apple does not cover water damage for Apple Watch. If water gets into your Apple Watch and damages it, you’ll have to pay for the repair unless you have an Apple Care+ plan. That’s why it’s a good idea to prevent water from entering your device and use such methods if your Apple Watch has been in or near water.
