Streaming services are great, but these days you can’t find one outside of the US without running into a lawsuit. Sure, you can try Spotify and Pandora for free outside of the US but then suddenly the apps stop working because “your country is not supported”. So now you have to play the cat and mouse game again.
In contrast, internet radio is way free. You can play the latest and greatest songs no matter where you are. It’s true that they’re off-demand (more on that later) but some apps allow you to record/download songs so you can listen to them offline without burning up your data plan.
Your guide to internet radio begins… now.
1. Tuning station
I did a big review of TuneIn 6.0 for iOS and the Android app is similar. The free Android app gives you access to 100,000 radio stations around the world. If you’re looking for your favorite local/country station, chances are TuneIn has it.
This is a great place to start for internet radio beginners. TuneIn Radio Pro is also available for $9.99, removes ads and adds the ability to record live audio.
2. Download and Stream with Audials
Audials does something unusual for a radio application. It allows you to search for artists and list the radio stations that are currently playing them.
The app has a large enough collection of US and international stations so finding the best new songs shouldn’t be a problem. Having one is also very handy Take note button. After you press the record button, the app will download the current song once it finishes playing and will keep recording new songs until you ask to stop.
The app has Wi-Fi-only streaming options as well as alarm clock and timer features.
3. Imported digital radio
If you’re interested in electronic music/emotional music, DI Radio is a must-see. The app is free and gives you a feed of today’s most popular channels and shows. You can plug in either and enjoy electronic music with all the relevant metadata.
This app also has a premium version which gives you higher quality sound and removes ads. Unlike Audials, DI is only for streaming audio. You cannot use it to record songs.
Replace: Old-fashioned Radio
If your phone doesn’t have an FM radio app, you should download NextRadio. It uses old fashioned radio signals to help you get your local radio stations. You will have to attach headphones as they act as antennas. Since this is an actual FM radio, there won’t be any mobile download charges or unnecessary battery drain.
