How to Change Default Browser, Make Firefox or Chrome Default

So the other day I downloaded and installed the latest version of Opera. I’ve heard good things about this new version and wanted to give it a try. Strangely, during the installation I don’t see any option to not set it is the default browser. It quickly installs and sets itself as the default browser.

I may have missed a step or two in the installation because as far as I know, all browsers let the user decide if they want to choose them as default. This is just an example and this can sometimes happen when some changes to the system change the default browser without letting you know. You only discover that when you click a link on, say, a chat window on your IM client, and it suddenly opens the link in the new browser you installed, instead of your favorite browser.

The purpose of this article is to show people – who are facing this problem – how to change the default browser to the old browser manually.

We’ll cover Firefox, Chrome, and IE in this post, and Safari and Opera in the next.

Make Firefox your default browser

In my case I had Firefox set as the default browser and wanted it to stay that way. So when Opera set itself as the default browser without my permission, it didn’t make me jump for joy. I want to open external links in Firefox.

Turns out it’s not that hard to revert the change. I had to go to Tools -> Options first to find the location of the setting. It’s under the Advanced tab. You can see below that there is a way to check if Firefox is the default browser without having to restart it.

When you click Test Now, it will pop up a box where you can set it as your default browser by clicking Yes.

Simple isn’t it? Now let’s see how we can do it in Chrome.

Make Chrome your default browser

Setting Chrome as your default browser is simpler because the setting is right on the first page of Preferences.

You can access Chrome Preferences by clicking the wrench icon at the top, and in the Basic section, at the bottom you’ll find a button that says Make Google Chrome my default browser. Clicking on it will get the job done.

Set Internet Explorer as default browser

Considering the rave reviews IE 9 has received, it’s possible that many people – who were previously not IE users – are now using it as their default browser. And then there are millions of other IE users to consider (Please don’t forget, IE is still the most widely used browser).

Regardless of which version of IE you are using, the Internet Options window is the answer to making it your default browser. You will need to go to Tools -> Internet Options, then Programs. There you will find a button to set IE as default browser. Click it, click OK and you’re done!

It’s about manually setting Firefox, Chrome or IE as the default browser. Tomorrow we will use Safari and Opera and see how to change the default browser in that case.
