How To Disable uTP In the Latest uTorrent Version

If you’ve been downloading torrents for any length of time, I’m sure you’ve heard of

μTorrent

convenient and possibly the most popular BitTorrent client for Windows.

It recently introduced a new lightweight protocol called uTP in its latest version – 2.0.

The developers of uTP claim it is ISP friendly, as it slows down the transmission speed when it detects network congestion. Many ISPs throttle and even block BitTorrent transmissions over their networks when they come across it taking up all the bandwidth. uTP aims to prevent such a situation, thus benefiting both the user and the ISP.

However, if you get your connection from an ISP with poor infrastructure and a congested network, you will find that your torrent download speed is almost constantly low thanks to uTP.

Personally, I have seen download rates drop by as much as 30% after installing a new version of μTorrent. That may not be noticeable to those with fast broadband connections, but for everyone with 1 mbps or slower connections, it’s a pretty serious problem (especially if you’re a torrent lover????).

Thankfully, uTP is not yet widely adopted, and μTorrent 2.0 gives you an easy switch to turn it off.

Here’s how you can do it:

  • Go to Options -> Preferences in the μTorrent window.

  • In the BitTorrent section, uncheck the checkbox next to “Enable Bandwidth Management”. Click OK, and you’re done!

Why should I bother disabling uTP?

Just for you Maybe disabling uTP doesn’t mean you Have ARRIVE! If you have high-speed Internet access with a reputable ISP, you won’t notice much, if any, drop in transfer speeds with uTP enabled.

Disabling it can really cause trouble, as your ISP may be throttling normal torrenting. Personally I think uTP is a step forward by the BitTorrent community that will help themselves, ISPs and ultimately us, the users, in the long run.

That being said, it’s still a pain for many people (yes, you guessed it, my connection sucks!) who have access to slow broadband connections from bad providers. If you are one of us, you should disable uTP now.
