Did you know that SMS alerts are an option in Google Calendar to set up reminders? Wouldn’t it be great if you could get an SMS notification a few hours before your friend’s birthday? This guide will show you how to enable that option in Google calendar.
How to set up your cell phone in Google Calendar
Go to Google Calendar settings. Click Settings -> Calendar Settings.
Click the Cellular Setup tab.
In the mobile setup page, select your country from the drop-down list and enter your mobile phone number. Click the “Send verification code” button. Your mobile phone will receive an SMS containing a verification code. Enter the code in the box provided on the mobile setup page and click “Finish setup”.
How to enable SMS notifications
For your own calendar, which shows up under “My Calendars” in Google Calendar, you can quickly add an SMS reminder by clicking the event, then clicking “Edit event details,” and then on the right, adding a reminder by selecting the SMS option from the drop-down menu.
For calendars you’ve subscribed to, shown under “Other calendars,” you need to first copy the event to your own calendar to set up reminders.
Here are the steps.
Go to any calendar event in “Other calendars”. In my Google calendar, I added the birthdays of my Orkut friends. I clicked on my friend’s birthday and then clicked “copy to my calendar”.
Details of that event will open. In the reminders section, email and Pop-ups are set by default. You can change the reminder options by clicking the drop-down menu, or you can add a new reminder.
I changed the reminder from Pop-up to SMS. To reduce SMS frequency, you can change “minutes” to “hours”.
After setting the reminder, click the “Save” button.
Now, when you go back to the calendar, you’ll see the same two events on the same day. This is because the external event has been copied to your calendar.
Now, you will receive an SMS just before your friend’s birthday. Similarly, you can add SMS notifications for sporting events or holidays.
