Remember Last Played Video Position in Windows Media Player

I can’t remember the last time

I watched a movie

on my laptop without interruption. One or the other is always present. That’s why I configured

GOM player

to remember the last played position of an interrupted clip so that next time I play the video I don’t have to manually find the timeline.

A friend of mine who came over for tea the other day saw this amazing feature and asked if the same could be done on Windows Media Player. Honestly, I’m not a fan of Windows Media Player. In fact, it will be the last player on earth that I use to play my video files. But since it is the default media player shipped with Windows, chances are a staggering number of you all use it on a daily basis. So we have to find the answer to my friend’s question. And, we were, already!

Today, we will share a great trick that will help you to remember the last played position of your movies on Windows Media Player and automatically resume them at that specific time when you play them back. Pretty useful, right? So let’s see how we can achieve it.

MyMediaBookmarks Plugin for Windows Media Player

Step 1: Close any instance of Windows Media Player running on your system to ensure a smooth installation. Once that’s done, download and install MyMediaBookmarks (UPDATE: This tool is no longer available) on your computer. The installation process is quite simple, just follow the steps on the screen to complete the installation.

Step 2: After successful installation, run Windows Media Player. By default, the plugin will automatically upload. For some reason, if the plugin doesn’t activate on its own, open Tools–>Plug-inssand choose Plugin MyMediaBookmarks. To open the plug-in configuration, Click Options.

Step 3: On the MyMediaBookmarks settings window, turn on the service and check Auto resume video files. If you want to automatically resume audio files, check the corresponding option.

Step 4: Playback time option when resume option will rewind the video to a specific time so you can catch up with the movie easily. By default, the time is set to 5 seconds and it’s good enough if you ask me.

Step 5: View the file types that the plug-in will track for bookmarking, in the File Types tab. You can add or remove from the list easily.

File Type Settings

Now, whenever you close Media Player in the middle of a video, the plug-in will mark the last play time for that particular video and automatically resume it the next time you play the file. If you want to delete all bookmarks, recorded plug-ins, open the plug-in settings and click the button Remove all bookmark buttons.

Conclusion

That’s pretty much everything about plugins. I’m sure this trick has fixed one of the shortcomings of Windows Media Player but as a piece of advice I recommend players like VLC and GOM. They are much better than Windows Media Player in every way.
