WhatsApp groups can be unpleasant or pleasant depending on the group you’re in. Some groups are quite helpful and it makes sense to continue being a member of them. However, annoying groups need to be muted immediately. And if possible, you can also delete the group.
But how to delete a WhatsApp group? It’s not as easy as hitting the delete button. Why do you ask? Because delete button does not exist by default in WhatsApp. You need to exit the group first to delete it. Confused? Don’t be like that.
We will clear all your confusion about deleting WhatsApp group in this post. Whether you’re an admin or just a member, by the end of the post you’ll know how to permanently delete a group.
Delete the group as a member
If you want to delete a group so that members can’t interact with each other, or in other words, delete the group completely, you need to be an admin of the group. We have covered that below. However, if you are a member of a group that just wants to remove it from their own phone, you can also do that by following the steps.
Step 1: Open the WhatsApp group you want to delete. Tapping the top bar displays group information.
Step 2: On the next screen, scroll down and you will find the option to Exit the group. Touch it. A pop-up will appear asking you to confirm your decision. Click Exit.
Once you do that, you’ll see that the group is still visible on your device. That’s because the group hasn’t actually been removed from your device, you’re no longer a member of the group. This means that when you leave the group, you can no longer join the group chats. In case you want to remove it from your phone, go to step 3.
Step 3: On the same screen, you will see that the Exit button is now replaced by a Delete group button. Tap it to remove the group from your phone. A pop-up window will appear. Click Delete.
Deleting a group by pressing the Delete button will permanently delete it for you and delete all its chat history from your phone. However, the group or group chat will not be affected for other members. They can still chat. They’ll just get a message in the group saying you’ve left the group.
Delete group as administrator
As an administrator, you are allowed to remove the group from its existence. Meaning you can delete it permanently so that no one interacts with it. However, WhatsApp does not provide a direct way to do that.
Similar to other members when leaving the group, if you press the Exit button, you are simply no longer a member but the group still exists. If there are more than one administrator, admin rights will still belong to them. However, if you are the only admin, WhatsApp will randomly set other people as admins. While you will get the Delete option after you exit the group, this will only delete the group chat history.
To delete a group permanently as an administrator, follow the steps:
Step 1: Open the group you want to delete for everyone. Tap the top bar to see the group members.
Step 2: This is the fun part. As an administrator, you have the right to remove anyone from the group. You need to use this permission and remove each member from the group. To do so, simply hold down the member’s name and press the Delete button.
Step 3: Repeat step 2 for all team members. Once you’ve deleted everyone, exit the group as shown above. After you get rid of it, you will get a Delete button. Tap it to delete the group permanently.
This method works regardless of device or software. You can use it on Android devices (such as Samsung, OnePlus, etc.) and iPhone.
So here is how to delete a group as admin and member. To further clear up your confusion about group deletion, here are some additional FAQs.
Delete WhatsApp group without admin
If you’re not the admin of the group, but you want to completely remove the group from everyone’s devices, we regret to inform that that’s not possible. You cannot delete a group permanently without administrator permission. Only administrators have the right to do so. Of course, you can just remove the group from your device as mentioned above.
Delete WhatsApp group without leaving
Again, it is not possible to delete a group without leaving it. Since the delete option isn’t available by default, you’ll need to leave the group first to get the delete button. Only when you exit the group will you be able to delete.
Delete group messages
Unfortunately, currently, WhatsApp does not give admins permission to delete group messages. For example, if a member sends an inappropriate message in the group, the administrator does not have permission to delete it.
Messages from the sender can only be deleted using the recently introduced Delete for Everyone feature.
If spam messages from group members bother you, the group restriction feature can prove to be quite useful. Using this feature, you can customize the group in such a way that only admins can send messages and members will only be able to read them.
Delete group chat
If you just want to delete the group chat from your device without deleting or exiting the group, that’s doable too. Here are the steps to achieve it.
Step 1: Open the group chat you want to delete. Tap the three-dot icon in the top right corner and select More from the menu.
Step 2: Tap Delete chat. From the pop-up you’ll get, tap Delete.
Note:
Farewell to Mr.
To avoid unnecessary group deletion, our dear WhatsApp has hidden the delete feature behind the exit button. Since groups are so important, even admins can’t directly delete groups. So be careful while deleting them.
And that, my dear friends, is the end of the story about how we delete WhatsApp groups.
