The Best Themes to Use With CyanogenMod’s Theme Engine

CyanogenMod has been doing a great job for Android enthusiasts lately. It’s not a performance update or a security overhaul. Instead, it is a simple theming tool.

If you run a custom ROM then you must have tried installing a theme. I’ve tried countless times over the past 3 years but I just can’t stand it. None of them are subtle, some are downright terrible. Much of it is due to the tools that designers have. That has changed now.

CM has rewritten their entire Theme Engine recently and if you are running the latest CM 11 ROM or other ROMs that integrate CM’s Theme Engine (like Carbon, Liquid Smooth, PAC, C-Rom, etc.) ), then you already have it installed.

What’s great about it?

Did I mention the themes really look good? Yes, they certainly do.

Another big change in the new Theme Engine is the interchangeability of theme elements (something MIUI users have loved for years).

For instance, you can download several themes and have icons from one theme, startup animations from another, and UI styles from a third. And all of it will actually work.

Find topics

Finding a topic – a really good one – for a CM is not an easy task. So the team built an app called About Topics that lists the best topics.

Choose a theme and it will open on the Play Store. You can also find topics on the XDA sub-forum.

1. Fi and more

If you’re a paranoid Android fan, you might already know about Arz Bhatia. The promising designer has branched out and created several themes for the new and improved Theme Engine. The only way to describe them is beautiful, in a way that Android never really perceives.

And don’t worry about future releases, Arz has committed to updating themes according to Material Design guidelines.

I think Fi is his best work and totally worth the $3 price tag. But let’s look around at some of his other themes. Another way Arz is making things interesting is to change the base color of the theme every month. It starts with Carroty-Red.

2. Throughput

Flush

At $1.70, Flux gives you a lot of class that’s worth your money.

3. Apartment theme

More options

Check out this thread on XDA that lists over 250 free and paid Theme Engine themes.

Remember that the Theme Engine is still in its infancy, and really beautiful themes are just starting to emerge. With a little more time, there will be more options.

Mix and match

As I said, the components of each and every thread are interchangeable. So download a few of them and play around until you find something that suits your personality.
