Keyboard shortcuts always come in handy no matter what software you’re using on your system. And they are an essential part of any energy user’s arsenal. But the ability to map custom keyboard shortcuts can take things to a whole new level.
However, not all programs allow you to map custom keyboard shortcuts by default. Take Firefox as an example; it provides the standard set of keyboard shortcuts you find on most other browsers, but no option to let you create your own mapping.
Thankfully, there is a very simple solution to that problem and that is what I will cover in this article. So let’s get started now and see how you can customize keyboard shortcuts in Firefox 67.
There are two different ways you can customize keyboard shortcuts on Firefox — you can customize general shortcuts for browser functions, or you can customize them just for extensions. First, let’s look at the former.
Customize keyboard shortcuts for browser functions
Before you begin, make sure you are running the latest version of Firefox on your system. After you finish downloading and installing the update, follow these steps to customize keyboard shortcuts for browser functions:
Step 1: Go to the Firefox add-ons website and search for the Shortcuts add-on.
Step 2: Click on the add-on and in the following web page click the Add to Firefox button.
Step 3: Then click Add in the pop-up window to install the Shortcuts extension in your browser.
Step 4: Once the add-on is successfully installed, click the Firefox menu button and select the Add-ons option from the drop-down menu.
Step 5: Select the Shortcuts widget in the following page and scroll down to the Edit Shortcuts section to add a new shortcut. Then enter the shortcut in the text box below the New Shortcut option.
In this case, I will create a new shortcut Shift+f to copy the URL. You can choose the behavior by following the next step.
Step 6: Click the text box below the Behavior option and choose your desired behavior from the pop-up menu.
Step 7: Once that is done, clock on the Label option to give your shortcut a name. This step is optional, so you can skip it if you don’t plan to add too many new shortcuts.
The new keyboard shortcut is pretty much complete, but there’s another setting you can change. By default, new shortcuts you create won’t work if your cursor is in form fields. But if you want them to work in form fields, you can follow the next step.
Step 8: Click on the Activation Settings option and then check the box next to the Active Field settings while in the form.
You can also choose which sites your custom shortcuts will work on in the same option. Just enter the URL in the text box below the Website option and you’re good to go.
Step 9: After you have customized the shortcut according to your requirements, you just need to scroll down and click the Save button to save the new shortcut.
Step 10: Once the new shortcut is saved, simply reload all the tabs in Firefox to start using it.
Now, there are a few things you should know if you plan to use this add-on. The first and most obvious thing is that it’s not perfect. So you won’t be able to create a shortcut for any action. You are limited to a few specific actions listed in the Behavior settings.
Second, if you try to remap any existing shortcuts, the add-on won’t work. So you will need to keep that in mind while setting up the new shortcut. In case you face any other problem, you can go to Shortkeys Wiki and find the solution.
Customize keyboard shortcuts for extensions
Now let’s move on to another type of keyboard shortcuts — those that work with extensions. Just follow these steps to set up a custom keyboard shortcut for the extension:
Step 1: Click the menu button in Firefox and select the Add-on option from the drop-down menu.
Step 2: In the next page, click the cog icon to open the extension settings.
Step 3: Select Manage Extension Shortcuts from the drop-down menu.
Step 4: The following page lists all the extensions that support keyboard shortcuts, along with editable text boxes next to the shortcut behavior.
Just click on a text box to edit and customize it to fit your needs. Please note that this feature is only available in the latest version of Firefox, so you won’t be able to use it unless you update your browser.
Map Your Custom Shortcuts in Firefox
Go ahead and use these methods to map your custom shortcuts on Firefox. Just make sure you don’t try to remap existing shortcuts when using Shortcuts as the add-on won’t be able to overwrite existing shortcuts.
