GIF keyboard is trending. Especially in the US. And if you can communicate with funny GIFs or sometimes instant reactions, then why waste time on words?
The GIF keyboard for iOS 8 we’ve seen so far offers a wide variety of GIFs based on popular genres, hashtags, and categories, but what if you want to customize your own keyboard? What if you have favorites that you need to use over and over again when there’s nothing else?
Below, we’ll talk about two apps that approach this problem differently.
Search and Fav GIFs with Blippy
When you open Blippy, you’ll get a stack of GIFs. Swipe right to favorite GIF (ie save it to GIF keyboard) and swipe left to see next. Swipe up to send to someone or tap to copy to clipboard.
The best part about Blippy is its search. Tap the search button in the top left corner and start searching for anything you like. Reaction GIFs, hashtags, whatever – and the app displays a stack of GIFs that you can browse through.

After the keyboard is turned on, press and hold the . key Sphere icon and select GIF Keyboard – Blippy. This will display all the GIFs you have saved. The app also has an old style keyboard in case you need to use your words.
GIFs only work like iMessages: If you didn’t know, sending GIFs with a custom keyboard only works in iMessages. Because of how the GIF keyboard works – you need to copy the GIF and paste it into the text input area – they are not supported by third-party apps like WhatsApp, Hangouts, or Slack. If you’re using those apps, you’ll need to share the GIF using the old-fashioned attachment method.
Download and collect GIFs from the Internet using Riffsy Keyboard
Riffsy doesn’t really look like Blippy. There’s not much you can do in the app other than create a collection. Most things happen in the keyboard view. Here you can browse popular tags and categories, save GIFs to a gallery, or copy them to the clipboard.
The best thing about Riffsy is the extension.

Once the extension is enabled, go to any page with GIFs, click on the extension and it will scan all the GIFs on the page. Select the ones you want to save, specify a collection, and they’ll be typed into your keyboard in no time.
Which is for you?
If all your GIFs are generic and mainstream, you’ll find them easily using Blippy’s search function. But if you’ve gotten too deep into the Tumblr verse or if you want to collect the GIFs you see on the internet, head to Riffsy.
