How to Use Apple News in iOS 9

Apple News is one of the new additions in Apple’s iOS 9 update for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The app will automatically appear on your Home screen after the update, so you can take advantage of it too.

The News app is capable of delivering articles directly to your iOS device in a distraction-free reading format. Most importantly, you can customize the news so that you only read about what interests you and don’t even have to watch any topics that you don’t care about.

Follow some essential steps to set up Apple News and get the most out of it.

Set up your custom news feed

When you launch Apple News for the first time, the app asks you to select some sources that you want to read. This will come in handy later for two reasons: your personal favorites and For you This section shapes your personal news based on what you choose as interesting.

You can choose individual channels (specific news sources) or broader topics, from Apple Music to entire technology. Nearly every topic imaginable is available in a wide range – from women’s soccer to sports or Kim Kardashian to celebrities.

Once you’ve chosen enough topics, Apple News will build some of your personal magazine. The For You section includes news stories from sources you have selected or are slightly out of your selection. In the end, it just presents you with what it thinks you might like.

Read and save your favorite articles

When you have all your favorite sources in the News app, you can read too. Tap on any article to show a clear view of the article’s content. No ads, no sidebars, no comments – just the words the title entices you to read. Apple News does not shorten or summarize articles like Yahoo News Digest or Circa, so you will receive a full copy.

Note: You may notice that different articles have slightly different layouts, especially when they come from different sources. This involves publishers’ ability to customize the look and feel of their articles to better reflect their brand. Not all sources take advantage of this, but some do, so colors and fonts may vary for a more personalized experience.

After you finish reading an article that you really like, consider clicking Heart icon in top navigation. This won’t save the article, but it does let Apple know that you liked it and will help News become smarter with your recommendations each time you “favorite” something.

To that right, you have additional options for sharing the post in Messages, Mail, or on social media. You can also open the link in Safari in this menu. Finally, touch Bookmark icon all the way to the right to save the article for later. It will show up in yours Saved collection. Go there to view your saved articles or a history of articles you have read.

Browse new content and sources

You are not stuck with your original choices forever. Tap the Explore tab to dig deeper into Apple News and find the channels and topics you’d like to add to the app. Some are automatically suggested based on the sources you’ve added, but if not, you can tap into general topics and navigate down to subcategories to add the specific sources you want.

You can also tap Search to find channels or topics. Unfortunately, the search feature doesn’t search for articles on its own, but hopefully Apple will add that feature in the future.

Last page

That’s all you need to know about Apple News. For now, it’s pretty straightforward seeing that it’s a new app, but it gets the job done. Otherwise, there are plenty of free alternatives. Hopefully it will introduce you to some new interests and keep you up to date with the world around you.
