Apple reinvents Do Not Disturb mode on iPhone with iOS 15. The new Focus Mode is like an upgrade to the DND toggle in Control Center with Dedicated Focus Mode. iOS 15 also brings custom Focus profiles. You can customize the Focus mode exactly the way you want. Here’s how to set it up.
Before we show you how to create a custom Focus Mode profile on iPhone, let’s learn about Focus Mode in iOS 15.
What is focus mode on iPhone?
Focus Mode takes the DND experience to the next level with customizable Focus settings and profiles. By default, Apple has added DND, Personal, Sleep, Driving, and Work as Focus profiles.
Based on your preferences, you can enable the Spotlight profile and continue operating in a quiet environment.
The system will disable notifications and pop-ups from specified apps and contacts. One can also design the homepage and set the widgets specifically for Spotlight mode.
The default Focus profiles are fine. But what if you want to create Spotlight profiles for Writing, Yoga, Running, etc.?
Yes, you can create a custom Spotlight profile for every possible scenario. It’s up to you how you want to customize the entire experience. The good news is that all your Focus profiles are synced to your iPad and Mac using the same Apple account.
Meaning, you can turn on the Focus profile on iPhone, and it will also toggle the switch on Mac and iPad (all devices need to use the same iCloud-enabled Apple account). No manual entry required. Let’s set up a custom Spotlight profile for Write so we can use it when drafting articles like this.
How to create a spotlight profile on iPhone
In the example below, we will create a Spotlight mode for Writing. You can change it and customize the options based on your preferences. Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open Control Center on your iPhone. iPhone users with a physical home button can use the bottom-up swipe up gesture. iPhone X and later can swipe down from the top right corner.
Step 2: Tap on Spotlight and it will open the current Spotlight profiles to choose from.
Step 3: Tap the + icon at the bottom and iOS 15 will ask you to choose to add Spotlight profiles or create a custom profile.
Step 4: Select Customize. Give it a suitable name and choose a theme. Select an icon representing the activity and press Next at the bottom.
Step 5: From the next screen, the system will ask you to select the people you want to receive notifications when you enable this Spotlight.
By default, it will make some recommendations based on your past interactions. You can add more or remove suggested ones. One can also select Favorites from Allow calls from menu at the bottom.
Step 6: Add relevant people to the list and tap Allow x Person at the bottom.
Step 7: Select the apps you want to receive notifications for when this Spotlight is on. Add relevant apps to the list and continue the process.
Step 8: iOS will ask you to allow time-sensitive notifications. It will allow apps to send important notifications instantly, even if you have Spotlight enabled. We recommend enabling this option.
That’s it. Your custom focus is ready. Tap Done at the bottom and the system will take you to more options for further customization.
Create a Custom Home Screen and Lock Screen for Focus Mode
iOS allows you to choose specific Home Screen pages to display when Spotlight is on. For specific Focus mode, you can define which apps to show on the Home screen. Here’s how to set it up.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Go to the Focus menu and select the Focus profile you want to customize.
Step 3: Go to Options > Home Screen and select Custom Pages.
Step 4: Select the Page you want to display in Focus Mode and tap Done at the top.
From now on, iOS will only show the selected Home screen page when Spotlight is on.
Similarly, you can enter the Lock Screen and Dim Lock Screen menus when Focus is on.
How to Automatically Enable Focus Mode
You can automate time-based Focus mode. For example, users can turn on Focus on Sleep at 11 p.m. and turn it off at 6 a.m.
One can even enable Location or Application based Focus mode. For example, you can automatically activate Job Gather your files when you get to the office. Or you can set the system to turn on Profile Focus when you open a specific application.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Go to the Spotlight menu and select Configure the focus you want to automate.
Step 3: Add a Schedule or Automation.
Step 4: From the new Automation menu you can define Spotlight mode to enable based on Time, Location or Application.
Let’s say your work hours are between 10am and 6pm. You can automatically enable/disable the Spotlight profile during that time period.
Going to a regular church for a week? You can use the Location option and enable DND Focus mode whenever you reach that particular location.
The possibilities are endless here. We’re glad to see Apple isn’t backing down on customization options.
How to delete centralized profile on iPhone
At any point, you can go ahead and delete custom Spotlight profiles from your iPhone. If you don’t need it anymore or want to simplify your options, you should remove unnecessary Focus profiles from your phone.
Step 1: Reveal Control Center on iPhone.
Step 2: Tap Focus and it will open all current Focus modes.
Step 3: Tap the three-dot menu next to the Spotlight profile that you want to remove.
Step 4: Go to Settings.
Step 5: It will open Detail Focus mode with full settings and customizations.
Step 6: Select Remove focus at the bottom and confirm your decision.
iCloud will remove the Focus profile from all connected devices.
Stay focused
Focus Mode is one of the best add-ons in the iOS 15 update. Apple has perfected the implementation with lots of options for flexibility, cross-device synchronization, and customization. It all works smoothly in true Apple style. The automation options are also rich and useful. We can’t wait to see how Apple goes further with upcoming OS updates in the future.
