Adobe Lightroom is a great tool to edit your photos and make them look more professional. In addition, it supports multiple camera models by default and allows you to import photos easily. However, that also makes it difficult to rename files, and doing so consumes a lot of time. Thankfully, Lightroom allows you to batch rename image files.
Not renaming photos can cause problems, especially if you have to process and share them with others or online. When sending to customers, they can be confused when looking for a particular image.
Luckily, renaming files in Lightroom is easy. And even better, you have a few options while you’re at it. Of course, you need to check Lightroom pricing for your region before you sign up and download it on your computer.
Here’s how to rename your photos in Adobe Lightroom Classic on your computer.
Rename photos as you import
If you think it’s easier to do so, you can rename your files before importing them into Lightroom. That way, all you need to do is edit and export them to your computer or hard drive.
We assume you’ve signed up for a Lightroom plan and installed it on your computer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to renaming your files when ready to add them to the app.
Step 1: Open Lightroom Classic on your desktop. Insert a memory card with pictures to import the pictures to your computer.
Step 2: Click on the image you want to import.
Step 3: On the right side of your screen, expand the Rename File tab and check the ‘Rename File’ checkbox.
Step 4: From the Template menu drop-down, select Custom Name. Below that, enter the name you want to assign to the photo.
Step 5: Import your photo. The image has now been renamed.
You can also rename multiple files at once using this method. Instead of ticking off one photo, select all the photos you want to name. Once they are imported, they will have your custom name instead of the default name.
Rename image after import
If you want to rename your photos after transferring the files to Lightroom, it’s very simple. All you need to do is follow the steps listed below.
Step 1: Double click on the image you want to edit the name.
Step 2: Scroll down to the Metadata tab and expand it.
Step 3: Click File Name and enter the name you want to give your photo.
Step 4: After entering the name, click anywhere on the page. Your file will now have a new name.
If you want to rename multiple files at once after importing, Lightroom also gives you the option to do this. The steps are slightly different and are listed below this text.
Step 1: Select the photos you want to rename.
Step 2: Click the option next to File name.
Step 3: On the pop-up box, click Set filename. From the drop-down menu, select Custom Name.
Step 4: Enter your new image filename and click OK.
After the pop-up box disappears, the filename of your selected image will change.
Rename the image when exporting
Renaming your files when exporting to your hard drive is also easy. To guide you through it, we’ve created a step-by-step list for you to follow.
Step 1: Select the file you want to export.
Step 2: Go to File and select Export.
Step 3: In the File naming section, check the box Rename to:.
Step 4: Enter the name with which you want to change your image.
Step 5: Select Export.
Once your image is exported, you’ll see it in the location you chose to save with a custom filename.
Like the other options, you can also choose to rename multiple files when exporting. The steps are almost the same as above. All you need to do more is select more than one image to export from the app.
Rename library folder
If you want to keep your workflow better organized in Lightroom, you may also want to rename your library folders. Doing so is very simple and the actions you need to take are below.
Step 1: In the photo preview on the left side of the screen, you will see a list of folders. Click the one you want to edit.
Step 2: Right-click and select Rename.
Step 3: When prompted, rename your folder.
Step 4: Click Save. Your folder name will change immediately.
Easy file name change
Managing your gallery files and folders is an easy way to improve your photo editing workflow. And while doing so may seem a bit confusing at first, it’s a pretty straightforward process.
