Laptops are slightly different from PCs and often have a lot of features. And we rarely use most of those discrete features. One of them is Airplane mode. If enabled, you will not be able to use the Internet (Wi-Fi or hotspot), connect Bluetooth, or perform any network activity.
Sometimes, while manipulating the settings or by pressing a key on the keyboard, people accidentally activate this mode. And the results are obvious. You will not be able to connect to the internet. So one would want to disable it immediately.
But how to do that? Here you will find 7 ways to disable airplane mode in laptops, especially Dell laptops. Let’s check them out. But before that, we should know how to tell if airplane mode is on or off.

How to know Airplane mode is on
When you turn on airplane mode on your laptop, you will see an airplane icon on the taskbar. It usually replaces the network icon.
Here are the methods to turn off airplane mode without much fuss.
1. From the Action Center
Windows 10 Action Center has a dedicated button to turn airplane mode on and off. To do that, open the Action Center by clicking the Action Center icon on the taskbar. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Windows key + A. Here, click on the Airplane mode option to turn it off.
Tip:
2. From Wi-Fi Settings
You’ll also find airplane mode in the Wi-Fi settings. For that, click on the Wi-Fi icon present on the taskbar. You will then find three options: Wi-Fi, Airplane Mode, and Hotspot. Click Airplane mode to turn it off.
3. Using Settings
Airplane mode is also available in Settings if you can’t find it anywhere else. Here’s how to go about it.
Step 1: Open Settings on your laptop by clicking the Start Menu icon, then the Gear-shaped Settings icon. Alternatively, press Windows key + I keyboard shortcut to launch Settings.
Step 2: In Settings, go to Network & Internet.
Step 3: Click on Airplane mode from the left sidebar and toggle off the switch under Airplane mode.
4. Use the Airplane Mode Button on the Keyboard
Most laptops have a dedicated button on the keyboard to turn airplane mode on and off. It is usually located in the top row and looks like an airplane. Press once to turn off airplane mode and press again to turn it on.
Some Dell laptops have a dedicated switch to enable or disable the wireless connection. It usually appears on the right edge of the keyboard. However, it’s not a hard and fast rule. It can be on any side, even below the touchpad. Find a button with a tower or plane icon on it. Slide it to the off position and airplane mode will be disabled.
6. Use keystrokes on the keyboard
If you can’t find a dedicated button for airplane mode, don’t worry because some Dell laptops have hidden this setting under different key combinations with the Fn key.
Short for Function, the Fn key increases the keyboard’s functions without increasing the number of keys. That is, each F key present in the top row can perform two functions – one without pressing the Fn key and the second with the Fn key. The Fn key usually appears between the Ctrl and Alt keys on your keyboard.
Here are some combinations to try:
- Press Fn and the key in the top row has an airplane or radio tower icon.
- Press the Fn and F2 keys together.
- Press the Fn and prt sc (Print Screen) keys simultaneously.
When you use these keys, the active key will display the message ‘Airplane mode turned off’ or ‘Airplane mode disabled’ on the screen.
7. Turn off Airplane Mode from the Login Screen
You then. You read that right. Airplane mode can also be disabled from the login screen in Windows (where you enter your password or PIN).
To do that, click on the Wi-Fi icon present in the lower right corner and tap on the Airplane mode icon.
Can’t turn off Airplane Mode
If airplane mode is grayed out or won’t turn off, you can fix it easily. Windows comes with its own troubleshooter for every problem. So, if your laptop is stuck in airplane mode, use the troubleshooter to fix it.
Here’s what you need to do.
Step 1: Open Settings on your PC and go to Update & security.
Step 2: Click on the Troubleshooting option present on the left side.
Tip: Type troubleshoot
Step 3: In the Troubleshooting section, click Internet Connection, then select Run the troubleshooter. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. Next, click on Network Adapters and hit the Run the troubleshooter button. Complete the process. Hopefully, that will solve the airplane mode woes.
Fly high without a plane
Airplane mode can be quite helpful when it comes to troubleshooting your PC. However, no one likes it when it automatically activates. Fortunately, Dell and Microsoft both offer ways to turn off airplane mode. We hope you’ve been able to use your internet again.
