I prefer watching movies or TV shows with subtitles, and the joy of having them completely in sync with each other is priceless. Most of the time, these subtitles are just a help. But then there are shows like Sherlock, where they’re forced to keep an eye on what’s going on, at least in my experience (or maybe I’m one of the few people who doesn’t speak a proper British accent).
When it comes to the desktop, working with subtitles is pretty easy, with the exception of Windows Media Player, of course. Players like GOM, KM Player, and VLC let you do almost anything and everything with subtitles. But when you record videos on mobile and still want to watch them with subtitles, MX Player is the best choice for you. It offers full control over video subtitles and offers nothing more than a desktop player.
Add subtitles in videos
If you have a subtitle file for your video on your computer, transfer it to your phone using a cable or Wi-Fi connection. I recommend moving the file to the same folder as your video, with the same name as the video’s name. For example, if the video name is GOT5010.MP4, the subtitle name should be GOT5010.SRT.
After you start playing the video, click the three-dot menu and select Subtitle select. Here, select Enter subtitles and select the SRT file you transferred for the video file. That’s it, enjoy the subtitles.
Download live subtitles
Let’s say you don’t have subtitles for videos on your SD card. MX Player will still be able to help you. Tap the three-dot menu and select Subtitle setting. Here, tap the option Get online subtitles to search and download the appropriate file from the internet.
One of the points to remember here is that, if the name of the file is not suitable for search, you can enter the search string. Take the previous example: if the filename is GOT5010.MP4, rename the file to Game of the Thrones s05E10 or search using that string manually.
This tool will give you a list of matching subtitles that the search string returns and you can download the desired subtitle. All subtitles will then be saved to the MX Player Subtitles folder from where you can select the subtitles you downloaded.
Adjust subtitles
Downloading subtitles is the easy part, and you’re in luck if the file you’ve downloaded matches the video you’re playing. However, sometimes, you get subtitles out of sync correctly. To fix the problem on MX Player, open the subtitle menu and you will have the option to sync subtitles. You can also speed up subtitles from settings. Adjust the seconds that you want the subtitles to sync, or if you’re not sure, press the up or down button until you sync them.
Finally in subtitle settings, you can choose from several basic fonts, and change the font size, color, and scale according to your needs. The same can be done by drag/drop or pinch/zoom while watching live video.
Conclusion
MX Player takes full care of the subtitle processing when you watch the video on it. I couldn’t ask for more on a portable player. Therefore, next time you watch a movie or movie part on your phone, make sure you watch it on MX Player and try the subtitle feature.
