To simplify the sign-in process on Windows 10 computers, Microsoft has introduced the Windows Hello login feature. One of the ways to sign in with Hello is with a PIN (Personal Identification Number). Some users want to disable Windows Hello PIN along with the Windows Hello setup prompt message they receive when turning on their PC.
We’ll explain how to manage Windows Hello sign-in options, why you should consider using them, and how to disable Pin preferences.

Windows Hello sign-in option
A PIN isn’t the only way to sign in to your Windows 10 computer. Windows Hello offers a lot of options like:
- Windows Hello Face uses facial recognition technology to sign in by scanning your face.
- Windows Hello Fingerprint uses your fingerprint, as long as you have a fingerprint scanner on your computer/laptop.
- Windows Hello PIN uses a numeric PIN with the option to add alphabets and symbols.
- The security key uses a physical USB key like the Yubikey.
- Password allows you to sign in with your Microsoft account password.
- Picture Password will use your uploaded photo to create a type of puzzle. Swipe the missing piece to the correct position to complete the puzzle and gain access.
Even if you don’t want to use the Windows Hello PIN option to sign in, there are other ways. As a long-term Windows user, I recommend using one of the available options. That will not only make the sign-in process much simpler and faster, but it will also prevent Microsoft from bothering you with setting up Windows Hello. No more notifications!
How Windows Hello login works
Microsoft ensures that the fingerprint, face, iris, or PIN that you use to sign in with Windows Hello will never leave your device. It is stored locally and encrypted to protect your privacy and data security. That means using Windows Hello is not only easy and fast, but also safe and secure. You can enable one of the other Windows Hello sign-in options with your Windows Hello PIN disabled if you wish.
How to disable Windows Hello PIN from Settings
A PIN is not the same as a password. There is a difference and I assume you have it set up. You can disable it from Settings or use Registry/GPE trick.
Press Windows key + I to open Settings, search for and select Change login requirements.
Click the Windows Hello PIN option once to bring up the menu. Here, you can restore your PIN if you forget it, delete it if you don’t want to use it, and change it. Click Delete.
Enter your Microsoft account password to complete the process.
Once the Windows Hello PIN is successfully disabled, you’ll see an Add option instead.
You’ll need to enter your Microsoft account password the next time you sign in to your Windows 10 computer. That would be more cumbersome than using a PIN. Windows Hello is supposed to simplify the process as passwords can be difficult/complicated to remember, as they have to be. Again, I recommend using one of the Hello login options.
How to disable Windows Hello PIN from Registry Editor
If for some reason the Settings is not working for you, you can also disable it from the Registry Editor. That should work for all versions of Windows, including those running the Windows Home edition. Search for Registry Editor from the Start menu and open it.
Navigate to the directory structure below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Settings\AllowSignInOptions
You will find a 32-bit DWORD file in the right pane called Values. Double-click the file to open it and set the Hexadecimal Value data to 0 (zero) from 1 and save the file. That will turn off the Windows Hello PIN. You can turn it back on by changing the Value back to 1.
How to turn off Windows Hello installation prompts
Microsoft wants you to use Windows Hello. Using a local user account might solve the problem, but then Microsoft will push you to create a Microsoft account instead.
Can’t get rid of the Windows Hello setup message when starting or logging in to your computer? There is a Group Policy Editor hack, but it is only available for Windows Pro and Enterprise users.
Search for the Group Policy Editor in Windows Search, open it, and see the folder structure details below.
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Hello for Business
Double-click Use a Windows Hello for Business file to open the file.
Select Disabled in the following pop-up and save the settings.
You won’t see a pop-up message to set up Windows Hello from now on.

Windows Hello is a great idea and I recommend it to everyone. It saves time, and it’s safe and secure. Especially if you are using a FIDO certified external USB device like Yubikey to log in.
