Google Forms is a flexible tool for creating surveys and quizzes. And over the years, Forms has included a lot of different features and add-ons. From file uploads to response type limits, it has broadened its horizons greatly. But when it comes to quizzes, Forms doesn’t have its own method for setting timers for quizzes and tests.
Thankfully, that’s not the end of the road. With the help of some add-ons, you can set timers for quizzes in Google Forms. The best part is that configuring them is very easy and doesn’t take much time.
The first add-on we are going to explore is the appropriately named Form Timer, while the second one is called Extended Forms.
Now let’s take a quick look at how to set up these add-ons and enable them in Google Forms.
How to set up a timer using the form timer in Google Forms
Step 1: To add a Form Timer to your Google Forms, open a form and click on the three-dot menu in the top right corner. Select Add-ons from the list. This extension will redirect you to the Google Workplace Marketplace.
Search for Form Timer and install it.
Step 2: Once you have your quiz questions set up, turn off the following options from the Settings page,
- Edit after submission
- Show link to send more feedback
Step 3: Once done, click the Add-ons icon on the top ribbon and select Configure.
This will open a small window in the lower right corner. Next, select Enable > Continue to the Form Timer link.
Please note that this will redirect you to the Form Timer setup page for more configuration.
Note: Refresh the page if you don’t see the Configure option.
Step 4: On the Form Timer page, click Set up > Test Config to enter the duration for your test. Please note that the maximum length of the test can be 180 minutes.
Also you can add Start Date and End Time through Timer Control.
The form timer also allows you to notify respondents about the time element. In addition, it also allows you to customize the message and font color.
Once everything is set up, click the Save button (you guessed it right) to save your settings.
Now all you need to do is click the Test Link button to copy the link to your quiz and share it.
Please note that respondents can use their Google account or email address to log in and try the test. When the test starts, a timer will be displayed at the top of the page.
Limitations of Form Timer
Like any other application, Form Timer is also not perfect and has some limitations.
First, the form doesn’t automatically submit when the timer stops. Respondents will have to submit it manually before the timer stops. Again, a candidate who has tried the test before cannot appear a second time.
In such a case, you will have to remove the candidate’s entry from the Form Timer page first.
How to add a timer using Extended Forms in Google Forms
Another add-on that allows you to add timers to quizzes in Google Forms is Extended Forms. This one works similarly, although the Extended Form provides a cleaner and simpler interface.
Moreover, it allows to automatically submit the form when the time is up.
Step 1: On the Google Forms page, click on the three-dot menu and select Add-ons and search for Extended Forms to install.
Step 2: Once that’s done, set up the test questions. At this point, disable the ‘Required’ option. Otherwise, Auto Submit will not work as expected.
Step 3: Now click on the Add-ons icon, select Extended Forms and click Configure.
You will see a small window open in the lower right corner. Now all you need to do is flip the switch for the ‘Connect to’ button.
Configuration takes a few minutes. Once done, you’ll see all the options for the form, such as Time Limit and Try Limit.
Save the settings after you have added the required parameter. Now all you need to do is share the form link with respondents.
Unlike the Form Timer, the Extended Form does not allow you to add a custom message at the start of the quiz. But with the simple interface, the compromise seems worth it.
right time
Timing is key in many puzzles, and these add-ons will help you manage those puzzles better. Naturally, both add-ons have their pros and cons and a lot of self-testing is required to arrive at a perfect solution. Please note that you may have to choose a paid plan if you are scheduling quizzes in bulk.
So, which of these add-ons would you use?
