Control Music Playback With Android’s Physical Buttons

If you have been following my articles, you must know how biased I am towards Android compared to iPhone. I always prefer Android as my default smartphone over iPhone any day. But today, I prefer the iPhone and that’s because of its compatibility with the different types of headphones we have on the market.

The default EarPods that come with the phone have hardware keys with which you can not only answer calls, but also control music playback. It even accepts compatible headphones with hardware buttons, making it easy to shuffle songs without taking your phone out of your pocket.

However, when it comes to Android, there are many different OEMs and manufacturers, and most of them don’t have the feature to use headphone buttons to shuffle songs. And the ones that have this feature, are limited to the available headphones and are hardly compatible with any other headphones. But we are talking about Android and from my experience I know there is always a solution.

For the present problem, the name of the solution is Physical Button Music Control (PBMC). PBMC is an Xposed Module that can be installed on rooted Android phones with pre-installed Xposed framework.

PBMC is not a plug-and-play application and requires configuration before you can use it. But the great part is that the app can be fully customized to your needs. So let’s see how the app works once we have it installed and activated in the Xposed app.

Note: App has been tested on Sony Xperia Z (Android 4.4.4) with Xposed framework. The two headphones tested were Motorola (one button only) and Monster DLNA (three buttons) and it worked every time. No compatibility issues.

Configure Physical Button Music Control (PBMC)

After you open the app, tap Add Mapping to map a hardware key to a set of actions. Once you tap the option, the app will detect any hard keystrokes, and once you confirm it, the app will add that option as a mapping. If you want to configure your headset keys, plug it in and press the key there. Just make sure you don’t select the power button. It doesn’t make any sense, believe me.

Now, under the current key mapping, tap each button name and you’ll see a list of actions you can perform on these buttons. Possible actions are single tap, double tap, long press. Tap any action you want to use and make your choice. Just remember that you don’t change explicit actions like volume buttons. The first priority should always be to increase or decrease the volume.

You can add mappings for each hardware button you have on your phone and headset, just remember the task assigned to each button. If you dig deeper, you can even launch and take pictures from your camera. It’s there if you look for it. But if you give up, just comment and we’ll help.

Choose Default Media Player for Tasks

The next great thing about the app is that it works on all media player apps, even music streaming apps like Spotify and Saavn. Knock on Setting and choose Signal receiver then tap the app where you play music. The app scans all media-capable apps on your device and sends a signal to specific Android activity.

The easiest way here is to play the songs on your default player and choose the option Use the most recently used media player.

That’s how you can control media playback on your Android using any headset’s hardware buttons. If using a Bluetooth headset without buttons, you can use the hardware buttons on your phone. One thing I like about this app is that even if you have a button on your headset (like the one provided by Motorola), you can assign up to 7 actions to it, which is more than enough for anyone.
