Most useful in situations when you take a call and put the phone to your ear and the screen turns off and on when you remove the ear. It shines an infrared ray (not visible to the human eye) at a nearby object, and the infrared detector detects how far away the object is. Actions are performed accordingly.
- Light sensor: Detects the brightness of the ambient light where the phone is located.
- Barometer: This is mainly found in high-end phones. You may know this. It detects the height of the phone above sea level. This gives better GPS accuracy.
