A Review of the New SkyDrive For Online Backup – Guiding Tech

So, after teaching you how to keep 25 gigs of free storage on SkyDrive, we’re back with a detailed review of the overhauled service as promised in our previous post. It seems that the online backup game has suddenly become famous with giants like Microsoft and Google (they launched Google Drive) jumping into the battle with everything they have.

New Microsoftskydrive

Some people say that services like Dropbox, SpiderOak, SugarSync and others are dead but I won’t come to that conclusion now. It’s still too early to mark the loyal user base of those services, so I’ll steer clear of prophecies about the demise of those services and just focus on the new SkyDrive for today.

What’s new about the new SkyDrive

  • A dedicated desktop application for Windows and Mac
  • Remote browsing
  • Mobile app (although currently not supported for Android)
  • Easier to share
  • File size limit up to 2 GB.

However, you can access SkyDrive’s mobile interface using any mobile browser.

Windows SkyDrive App

Sooner or later… in this case, Microsoft recognized the importance of launching a dedicated Windows application to make file synchronization easy for the average user. We’ve seen before how you can use Live Mesh to access SkyDrive and sync files and folders, but with the new dedicated app, things become pretty easy.

Just download and install the app to get started.

Begin

During the setup process, you will be asked to provide your Windows credentials. Once setup is complete, you should see a new folder called SkyDrive in your user folder on the C: drive.

Sign in to Windows Live

You can now use the SkyDrive folder just like any other folder in Windows except for one difference that makes it useful – all files you drop into this folder will be automatically synced with Your SkyDrive online and therefore backed up to the cloud.

Skydrive has been created

That’s all about the new and awaited desktop app for SkyDrive, now check out the Remote Access feature.

Remote access

With all the new features and a trickle of online storage space, Remote Access is like a cherry on top. With this feature, you can access all the files of a computer that has the SkyDrive app installed and is linked to your Live account on SkyDrive.

Remote access

By all files, I mean everything. From documents to mass storage, you can access everything. You can also stream media files and download the ones you require in the cloud. The only thing that is required is that your home PC be connected to the internet and be plugged in (obviously).

valuation

New SkyDrive users get 7 GB of free storage and all the perks mentioned above. Users can add 20GB for $10/year, 50GB for $25/year, and 100GB for $50/year to the 7GB free backup.

If you asked me, I would say the pricing plan is reasonable enough. Microsoft claims that they have the best product in terms of features and price on the market.

Conclusion

So go ahead, test drive the new Microsoft SkyDrive today. Those of you who thought that SkyDrive is not a competitor to Dropbox, it’s time to try SkyDrive. You have nothing to lose here.
