Recently, Microsoft noted that you must sign up for a
Microsoft or Outlook account
if you are using any of its services or products. You are forced to do it in the latest releases like Windows 8, Windows Phone 8,
MS Office 2013, Office 365
and many more.
By now, you must have noticed that Microsoft does not regularly send emails in your account. These messages are usually announcements about new things, updates and latest news. And when it comes to technological improvements, I’m sure most of you don’t want to miss them. Also, some of you may not want to use a Microsoft account. So how do you go about this?
The solution is to change the preferred account and get all such notifications on another service. Here’s how to do it.
Steps to change Microsoft notification account
First, decide which account you want to receive notifications for. Then link that account to the Microsoft account you own.
Step 1: Navigate to Windows Settings via the Charms bar. Knock on Change computer settings to start Setting page.
Step 2: From the left pane of PC Settings click the page User.
Step 3: In the right pane, you will see a link to manage More online account settings. Click this link.
You will immediately be navigated to your account profile on the default browser. You will be asked to sign in.
Step 4: When you’re done, you’ll need to select Notification option from left side banner. On the right, click Manage email preferences.
Step 5: On the next page you will see the reading section Preferred email address. click Change link under the above account.
Step 6: From the drop down list for my favorite address choose the account you really like. You’ll see all the accounts you’ve associated with your Microsoft account here. If not, you can actually add a new one by following Add a new address.
Rescue settings and you’re done. From that point forward, you will receive all notifications from Microsoft on the new address – the preferred address.
Hot Tip: This process works like email forwarding rules. To create such a rule on any account, follow this guide. To do the same thing on MS Outlook, desktop client, read this article.
Conclusion
Some people prefer to use the brand new Outlook email interface. If you are one of them, no problem at all. However, if you hate using that interface and are looking for a way to stay in touch with Microsoft notifications (without signing in to your Microsoft account), then this process is for you.
