Apple iCloud services are an important part of the Apple ecosystem. The seamless backup and restore process via iCloud is why most won’t mind paying for it. But if the iCloud backup gets stuck or takes too long to complete for you, you should take a closer look. Here are the factors that can cause iCloud backups to take longer on iPhone and tricks to fix the problem.
While trying to back up to iCloud, you need to keep in mind that this mostly requires a stable and consistent connection. Without that, you may have an incomplete or no backup. Here are some things you need to verify and troubleshoot to make sure iCloud backup goes smoothly and doesn’t get stuck.
1. Slower Wi-Fi Speed
Even though you have the fastest 5G connection in your area, you will have a hard time performing iCloud backups on a cellular data connection. That’s why even Apple recommends using a Wi-Fi connection. If your iPhone or iPad is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, we recommend switching to the 5.0GHz band for better speeds.
Restarting your router can help, and you can also test your connection speed using fast.com or Speedtest for its reliability.
2. Large capacity iCloud backup
Once you’ve enabled everything from media to apps like WhatsApp in your iCloud backup, the overall size of the backup can increase dramatically. Before we show you how to reduce the iCloud backup size, you can check the next backup size from the Settings menu. This is the way.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Go to the Profile menu.
Step 3: Select iCloud and open Manage Storage.
Step 4: Select Backup and check your current device backup.
Step 5: From the following information menu, you will see the last backup time, backup size, ability to delete current backup and next backup size.
Based on your usage and preferences, the capacity can range from 1 GB to 15 GB (this is just a guess, maybe more than 15 GB for proficient users). In our case, the current backup size is 10.36 GB.
If you feel your iCloud backup is too large, you can exclude the main apps from the backup list.
Exclude apps like WhatsApp from iCloud
WhatsApp uses iCloud to store users’ chat and media data. If you want to download and keep any media sent to you on WhatsApp, it might take 8GB-10GB of space in an iCloud backup. However, you can choose to exclude WhatsApp data.
Open Settings on your iPhone and go to the profile menu. Select iCloud and scroll down to WhatsApp. Disable the toggle and from now on, iCloud will no longer back up WhatsApp chats and data.
Turn off media backup
If you’re using OneDrive or Google Photos to back up photos and videos, it doesn’t make sense to store the same data on iCloud.
You can open iPhone Settings and scroll down to Photos. Disable the iCloud Photos toggle and you’re good to go. Don’t forget to back up new photos and videos to one of the iCloud alternatives on your iPhone.
3. Exclude Videos from WhatsApp Backup
Some messages are too precious to not be backed up on iCloud. So you can make sure those chats are part of the backup and delete all unwanted videos and photos from WhatsApp.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on iPhone and go to Settings.
Step 2: Select Chat and open Chat Backup.
Step 3: Disable the Include Video switch and it will reduce the backup size.
The practice will lead to a faster iCloud backup process on iPhone.
4. Keep iPhone connected to a power source
iCloud backups only happen when your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi, powered, and locked.
Don’t make it a habit to occasionally unplug your iPhone from charging. It will pause the iCloud backup process and result in a longer backup time.
5. Disable background downloads
Trying to download the latest Ted Lasso on Apple TV or Money Heist on Netflix to watch offline? It is recommended to turn off background downloads so that iCloud can use all internet bandwidth and complete the backup process quickly.
6. Check iCloud server
iCloud doesn’t win any awards for reliability. There may be times when the iCloud servers get stuck.
Go to Apple’s System Status page and check the iCloud Backup status. Make sure it has a green indicator and then try again.
Regularly back up iCloud
If you are impatient, you have no choice but to use iTunes to complete the backup process. It’s not as seamless as using iCloud, but it gets the job done.
