Fix Modern UI Issues After Upgrading to Windows 8.1

If you’ve updated Windows 8 to 8.1, you probably know how nightmares can be if you have the Windows 8 Pro edition exclusive CD Key. Although I somehow managed to install the Windows 8.1 update, after restarting my PC I found the Windows 8 tiles on my desktop were missing. Also, after a few days when I was trying to pair my Bluetooth speaker with my computer, I realized that Windows 8 Modern Install kept crashing without giving any kind of error message.

Start Windows 81

Simple energy recycling solves most Windows errors, but this is not one of them. Setting up a modern PC is pretty important to me because it’s the only way I can pair a Bluetooth device with my computer. I decided to look for an online fix.

After searching through various forums I was able to fix the settings. So it’s easy to understand and you can follow to fix similar problems you might face.

Get back Windows 8 Modern Desktop Tile

First of all, let’s see how we can get back the Windows desktop tile that you may have accidentally deleted or lost after updating Windows 8.1. Open run command and execute command %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. Now download the Desktop.ini file (UPDATE: This file is no longer available) to your computer and move it there programme folder that you just opened with the Run command. Having done that, restart your Windows explorer.

Start tiling the screen

That’s it, you should now see the screen tile in its right place.

Troubleshoot modern PC settings

Now let’s see how we can fix the Windows 8 PC Setup problem. There are three things that can be done and I would like to tell you that these do not come from Microsoft tech center and only is the documentation of the steps I followed to get the job done. I don’t guarantee 100% success rate, but it’s worth a try.

Run system restore

You can run Windows 8 system restore and see if any restore points were created before the update and restore your system settings. To run system restore, open the Run dialog and execute the command rstrui.exe command. Here, find any restore point you have on your system and select it to go back in time.

System recovery

This process can take time and can also fail after a major critical update and that’s what happened in my case. But don’t worry, move on to the next troubleshooting section that fixed the error for me.

Run System File Checker

Right click on the Windows menu in the lower left corner and click Command Prompt (Admin). Now type sfc /scannow and run System File Checker utility. The system scan may take some time and it is best to close all running programs while they are on. After the scan is finished, it will automatically detect and repair corrupted Windows 8 files, and a simple restart after the troubleshooting process.

System File Checker

The trick worked for me perfectly and now I can run Windows Modern PC installations without any errors. However, if you still can’t get a working PC setup, try creating a new administrator account and see if you can access it.

If not, I’m afraid refreshing the PC is the last resort you have left. Read everything about refreshing and resetting a Windows 8 PC in this article.

Conclusion

So those were some possible fixes to modern PC installation problems that started occurring after updating to Windows 8.1. One thing that annoys me is that there are a lot of users who are having this problem and post about it on Microsoft online forums looking for a fix, but they turn a blind eye to the customers. Completely unacceptable!
