Virustotal is an online virus and malware scanner that analyzes your files using a number of antivirus and security services and shows you how likely your files are to be infected. It quickly detects viruses, worms, trojans and all kinds of malware.
There are three ways to scan files for viruses and malware with this tool. Check them out.
1. Direct upload method
Click the “Choose File” button and select a file from your computer. There is an option to send files over SSL protection. Click the “Submit File” button to upload the file.
It will upload files to the server and then scan for viruses and malware using various virus checking services.
2. Send files by email
Send email to [email protected] in the following way.
- In the subject field write SCAN.
- Attach the file to be scanned. The maximum file size limit is 20 MB. If the attachment is larger, the system will automatically reject it.
- Virustotal will analyze your file and respond back with a detailed report. It will take some time to scan the file depending on the load on their server.
3. Virustotal Uploader
Download and install Virustotal application (140KB file) on your computer. Right click on the file you want to check for viruses. Go to Send To -> VirusTotal.
It will upload the file to Virustotal.com.
Once uploaded, it will redirect you to your default browser and start scanning for viruses. One by one, it scans the file with different anti-virus services and displays the results.
This service is provided free of charge. It has nearly all the top antivirus services on its list so you can clearly see which service reports your file as suspicious and which thinks it’s safe. Depending on the results, you can conclude whether the file really has a virus or not.
