8 Things to Know About Instagram Nametag

When you think Instagram has finished copying Snapchat’s features, you’re wrong. In the latest episode ‘intimation is the best form of flattery’, Instagram borrows Snapchat’s Snapcode feature and presents it as a Nametag. Instagram believes that Nametag will help you quickly find and follow people you meet in real life.

Nametags are similar to QR codes. Each Instagram user receives a unique tag based on their username. Other Instagram users need to scan your Nametag and vice versa, to follow each other quickly without searching for usernames. You don’t need to download a separate app to scan tags as this feature is part of the Instagram app.

So what all does this feature offer? Can you customize it? Here you will get all the answers.

Let’s start this journey to know all about Instagram Nametag.

1. Create a Nametag

Technically, you don’t need to create an account because Instagram automatically creates it. You must access it to customize and share it.

Here’s what you need to do to access it.

Step 1: Open the Instagram app and go to your profile page. Then tap the three-bar menu in the upper-right corner.

Step 2: From the menu, select Nametag. Your nametag will open. Let others scan it or you can share it too (more on that later).

2. Customize Nametag

Instagram offers three ways to customize your Nametag. You can change the background color, add emojis to the background and create a selfie nametag with stickers.

Change background color

When you open the Name Tag, Color is the default customization option. Tap anywhere on the screen to explore the palette.

Add emoji

Tap the Color option at the top to switch to Emoji mode. Again, tap anywhere on the screen. Once you do that, the emoji drawer will open. You can choose any emoji from it.

Selfie background

If the two options don’t satisfy you, use a selfie background. To switch to it, tap the Emoji button at the top. But if you see a Color button, tap it twice. Then tap the sticker to change and take a selfie. Once captured, your selfie thumbnail will be the background of your Name Card.

If you don’t like your current Selfie Name Tag, tap the Retake option to start over.

Things to keep in mind:

  • You can only choose one emoji at a time.
  • You cannot switch to the rear camera in Selfie mode.
  • You cannot combine these three modes and must use them individually.

3. Scan name tag

There are three ways to scan Nametag in real time.

Method 1: From the Story screen

This is the easiest way to scan Instagram Name Tag. You need to get to the Stories screen by swiping right on the main screen of the Instagram app. You can also tap the Camera icon in the top left corner.

While in camera mode, point your camera towards the Name Tag and press and hold on your screen. Instagram will automatically scan the Nametag and will recognize the user to give you two options — Follow or View Profile. Choose one of the two.

Method 2: From Search

There may be another option to scan from Search or Explore feeds. When you open the Search tab, you’ll find a small scan icon to the right of the Search bar. Tap on it and you will see the scan screen. Again, point your camera towards the Name Tag and hold the screen until your phone recognizes the profile.

Method 3: From the profile screen

When you access your Name Tag from the profile screen, you can also scan your Name Tag from the same screen.

To do so, tap on the Scan name tag option at the bottom.

4. Share name tag

The good thing about Nametags is that you can even share them through other apps or print them. So that others can scan it and track you.

When you access your Name Tag from the profile screen, you will find a Share button in the top right corner of the same screen. Tap it and you will get sharing options. Share it using an app from the share menu.

5. Scan a name tag from the library

To use the Nametag from your gallery, tap the Gallery icon on the scan screen. That is only available for the search and profile method. Then navigate to the Nametag that you want to scan. Instagram will automatically recognize it.

6. Should You Share Nametags on Instagram?

I come across many people posting screenshots of their Nametag on Instagram itself. Well, that’s not true. Name tags for people who don’t follow you. When you post it to your Story or as a regular post, viewers are already following you. There’s no point in sharing it there unless you urge others to share it.

7. Is Account Tracked Immediately After Name Plate Scanning?

Are not. As mentioned above, after scanning the Name Tag, you will have two options — Follow and View Profile. If you want to follow them, tap the Follow button.

In case you already follow them, Instagram will notify you about it.

8. Will customizing the nameplate affect the existing nameplate?

Are not. Your new customizations will not affect your existing Name Tag. If you’ve shared it publicly, people can still follow or view your profile using them.

Are they worth it?

Difficult question. Something similar exists for Facebook and Twitter, but I hardly see anyone using it in real life. That may be because so few people use Facebook now.

Currently, searching for usernames seems to be a better option than asking for Nametag. That means, when you meet someone in person or chat online, getting a Name Tag makes it easier for you to scan and track anyone.
