Use Windows Live Mesh 2011 to Sync Data Online to Windows SkyDrive

Hardware failures and system crashes are not uncommon events. One night, you were working on your computer without any problems and the next morning when you woke up, your computer wouldn’t start. Suddenly, you realize you’re in a big mess because the last backup you made has been around a week and all your latest data is gone in a split second. Been in this bleak situation before?

If you don’t want to lose important documents or files stored on your computer, storing them online, in addition to the usual external hard disk-style backup, is the best option.

In this article we will talk about Microsoft’s cloud storage service called SkyDrive which offers free storage up to 5GB and we will see how we can use Windows Live Mesh to sync data from computer to SkyDrive.

Windows Live Mesh is part of the free Windows Live Essentials suite and is designed to synchronize your files, folders, and settings between two computers or in the cloud.

Set up Sync

Step 1: Download and install Windows Live Mesh on the computer you want to sync to the cloud and launch it. Before you start, you need to sign in with your Windows Live account. If you don’t already have a Windows Live account, you can get one from the Windows Live homepage (the hotmail account is also a Windows live account, in case you don’t know).

Step 2: Once in, you will come to the main interface of the Windows Live Mesh program. To start folder synchronization, click Sync folder.

Step 5: The program will start the synchronization process. The initial sync may take time depending on the size of the folder. Meanwhile, you can switch to some other work and let the program run in the background.

Once your initial sync is complete, you can view your files on the Windows Sky Drive online storage space in the Synced Folder.

All done now, any changes you make to the online or offline synced folder will be reflected on both ends. You can add more folders to your SkyDrive by repeating the process from step 3 above.

My judgment

Integrating Windows Mesh with SkyDrive is a very good attempt to keep our work synced and backed up in the simplest possible way. Additionally, the free account gives you 5GB of online storage, more than most other similar hosting services offer.
