I’ve mixed Incognito mode with a normal Chrome window countless times. That’s why I often have trouble launching Chrome in Incognito mode without issue. Maybe it’s just me, but I believe this is happening mainly because Chrome has applied dark mode. Both Normal and Incognito tabs now look almost the same, right?
However, I don’t want to drop dark mode in Chrome just because of that. That’s why it can be so helpful to learn how to always launch Chrome in Incognito mode. That reduces the possibility of forgetting to switch to Incognito mode after you open the browser. But how do you do that?
If you’re willing to spend a few minutes, you can easily create a shortcut that allows you to easily open Chrome in Incognito mode. You can create it on Windows and macOS.
On Android and iOS, launching Chrome in Incognito mode is even easier if you know how to do it. So read on.
Google Chrome — Windows
Launching Chrome always in Incognito mode on Windows is quite simple. You must create a desktop shortcut by adding a simple command line to the default file target. Alternatively, you can do it with the shortcut already on your desktop. Or you can copy the shortcut (using Copy and Paste) to have two shortcuts — one to launch Chrome in normal mode and one to always launch Chrome in Incognito mode.
Note:
Step 1: Right-click the Chrome shortcut on your desktop, then select Properties.
Step 2: Switch to the Shortcut tab in the Properties dialog box. Follow up by adding a space to the file path at the end of the Target field. Then insert the following command line:
–incognito
Then the file path will be like the one in the screenshot below. Click Apply, then OK to save your changes.
Step 3: Double-click the shortcut and Chrome will always launch in Incognito mode all the time. In my case I have two desktop Chrome shortcuts that allow me to open Chrome in normal or Incognito mode. To avoid confusion, I have renamed them appropriately.
If you want to stop launching the shortcut in Incognito mode, simply remove the ‘–incognito’ command line from the Target field via Properties and save your changes.
Did you know: Private browsing or browsing in incognito mode does not hide your browsing activities or prevent others from snooping on your browsing activities. Using a VPN service helps prevent that by masking your physical location and IP address. We recommend ExpressVPN (sign up with this link and save 49% on the annual plan).
Google Chrome — macOS
Unlike on Windows, you cannot edit Chrome shortcuts on macOS to always launch the browser in Incognito mode. Instead, you have to create a simple script for this purpose. Don’t worry – it’s pretty easy to do.
But there are a few things that you must keep in mind. Firstly, the script will not have the Chrome icon. Instead, it will look like it really is—a scenario. Second, the script won’t work if you have Chrome installed and running. In such cases, you have to open the Incognito tabs manually.
Step 1: Open the AppleScript Editor. Type applescript editor in Spotlight (shortcut Cmd+Space), and then press Enter to do so. On the window that appears, click New Document.
Step 2: Copy and paste the script below into AppleScript Editor:
execute shell script “open -a /Applications/Google\\ Chrome.app –args –incognito”
Step 3: Open the File menu, and then click Save.
Step 4: Enter a name for the script (something recognizable), choose a location to save the file (Desktop is most convenient), and choose the file format as Application. Finally, click Save.
Step 5: Use the script whenever you want to launch Chrome in Incognito mode.
You can also drag it down to the Dock and use it alongside your regular Chrome shortcut for added convenience. However, you must not have any normal Chrome windows running in the background when using the script.
Google Chrome — Android and iOS
To always open Chrome directly in Incognito mode on Android, you don’t have to modify keyboard shortcuts or create scripts from scratch. Instead, the Chrome icon already has that function. Just touch and hold it for a second. You’ll then see a context menu — tap New Incognito Tab and you’re good to go.
The same applies to Chrome on iOS. And you don’t need a device with 3D Touch either, as Haptic Touch rules start in iOS 13. Press and hold the Chrome icon, then tap New Incognito Tab. You can do this on any iOS device (iPhone or iPad) running iOS 13.
Tip:
Anonymous access
Being able to always open Chrome in Incognito mode helps a lot in avoiding confusion. After following these methods, I didn’t have to spend time clearing my browser cache to get rid of private searches just because I forgot to switch to incognito mode.
Plus, you save yourself from doing those extra clicks to launch Chrome and then spend two clicks relaunching Chrome in Incognito mode.
