Google Photos is free and awesome. As we’ve decided before, you won’t be harmed by trying it out. But trying it out means uploading hundreds or thousands of your photos to Google Photos. And since Google Photos didn’t exist until now, your photo collection is in disarray. Photos on your iPhone might be in iCloud/Dropbox Photo Library, DSLR photos might be in iPhoto/Lightroom library, and old photos might be stored in a folder somewhere.
Sadly, there is no 1-click way to automatically upload all photos from Dropbox to Google Photos (no API yet). So we will need to do this manually. But once it’s done, you can start reaping the many benefits of Google Photos.
Step 0: Install Google Photos Backup
The first thing you need to do, even before we start collecting photos from the 63 different services you’ve subscribed to, is install Google Photos Backup. It’s just an automatic uploader (no two-way sync like Dropbox here) that you can specify folders to view. Whenever new photos appear in that folder, they are automatically uploaded to Google Photos.
Download the app and sign in to your Google Account. The app will automatically select some default folders like Pictures And desktop. You can add a new folder using Add button.
Below you can switch between the free unlimited storage option for uploading compressed images to 16 MP and the full resolution option that counts towards your Google Drive storage.
1. Upload/Sync Photos from Dropbox
If you’re using Dropbox and the folder where all your images are synced to your Mac/PC, half the battle is over. If that’s not the case, download and install the Dropbox app, go to Interest and from Selective sync, check the directory. This will first download all images to your local storage.
Now go to Photo Backup app Interestclick Add and navigate to that Dropbox folder to add it. Yes, the process of first downloading an image from one cloud storage and then uploading it to another cloud storage sounds counter-productive but for now that’s all we can do . And hey, once it’s done, it’s done.
Another advantage is that once you’re all set up, Google Photos can be a secondary place to back up images. If you enabled Dropbox auto-upload, which uploads all new photos to a specific folder, with Photo Backup viewing that folder, you now have another copy of your files. photos in Google Photos. And this doesn’t require running two apps from your phone.
2. Transfer Photos from Facebook/Instagram
Facebook allows you to download everything on your profile with one click. Go Setting -> overview and click Download a copy of your Facebook data. Then confirm on the next screen and enter your password. After a while, Facebook will send you a link to the zip file.
Now go to the Google Photos website, find the Facebook zip file on your PC, find all the photos in it and simply drop them in the browser window.
To download all your Instagram photos, use Downgram or follow our instructions here. Once they are downloaded, upload them to the Photos website in the same way.
3. Transfer photos from Flickr
Go to your Flickr profile, from the thumbnail view click on the photo you want to download and click the icon Download button. Once they’re downloaded, drop them on the Photos website.
4. Upload/Sync iPhoto/Photo Library from Mac
If you’re a heavy iOS user, all your photos are probably in your iPhoto library (now known as the Photos app). If that’s the case, you don’t really need to do anything. Because when you install Photos Backup app, it will check iPhoto Library option by default.
I moved my iPhoto library to the Photos app but the upload still works for me. But you should know that this will only work for photos you have stored locally on your Mac. This won’t work for photos in iCloud Photo Library and is just syncing thumbnails to your Mac. If so, go to the Photos app and turn it off Optimized Storagedownload iCloud Photo Library for offline use and then run Google Photos Backup.
If you have photos in iCloud Drive, just select them and drag them to the Photos website. Or you can enter icloud.com and manually download the photo from there. But it will take a lot of time. Using the Photos app to do this is a much better idea.
Lightroom or any other photo management app: If you’re using Lightroom or any other professional photo editing app, just point the Photo Backup app at the folder where it stores all your photos. This way, every time you import new photos, they are automatically uploaded to Google Photos. It won’t be full resolution, but it is something.
