There may be more ways than you think to get rid of your smartphone and get cash for it instead. Smartphone technology advances pretty quickly, and year after year, manufacturers like Apple and Samsung introduce new models that make last year’s models look like junk. However, many phones from last year can still make you hundreds of dollars.
Works or not, you can still get money for an old device| shutter
You don’t have to post to your Facebook friends that you’re selling your phone, and you don’t even need to trade it in with your carrier. That will probably make you less money than it’s worth. The three sites in particular are pretty good at giving money to your old smartphone at a competitive price. I’ve used two of them and can attest to the value and customer service.
1. Acquisition World
In my experience, BuyBackWorld tends to give the most money for an old smartphone. Swapping my 64GB iPhone 6 for a new iPhone I could get $342. That’s more than any offer I’ve found on the Internet and certainly more than any of my friends are willing to pay for it.
The site accepts almost any phone you can think of — though if you’re trying to get rid of a basic feature phone, you’ll be lucky to get anything for them. But for popular smartphones like iPhone and Samsung Galaxy devices, you can get decent. BuyBackWorld also interestingly accepts gift cards, if you’re looking to sell them.
When you sell your phone, you’ll have to choose its current condition: poor, average, excellent, or new. Unless it’s broken and doesn’t work, yours is probably average or excellent. You’ll receive a box in the mail to put your device in and send it back for free. After checking, you’ll receive your payment via check or PayPal — whichever you choose.
2. Antelope
Gazelle is probably the company you’ve heard about most because it often appears in television commercials. Gazelle’s process is perhaps the most logical. It works just like BuyBackWorld: pick your phone, carrier, storage, then see if it’s broken, good or perfect. You will receive an offer that you can accept or decline and your free shipping package will be sent. It also has tablets, Macs and iPods.
However, Gazelle usually offers less money than BuyBackWorld. When trying to sell my 64GB iPhone 6 (yes, I’m sick of 16GB too) Gazelle only offered me $311 versus $342 from BuyBackWorld. But the quick process and safe packaging are reassuring.
Note: Keep in mind that due to the nature of the market, offers for different phone models can increase and decrease, so be sure to check often for better or lower prices.
Gazelle offers payment via check, PayPal or Amazon Gift Card for an extra 5 percent.
3. uSell
uSell works a little differently than the first two services. In some cases, you can get extremely high offers even higher than BuyBackWorld. The downside is that usually, you will have to ship directly to the buyer. It’s still free as uSell will provide the shipping kit and labels, but reliability may vary.
Fortunately, to fix this problem, uSell has taken it upon itself to offer a “Managed by uSell” offer, which means you give your phone to uSell and they take care of the rest. If you get a Managed by uSell offer, take advantage of it as they are usually quite generous. uSell also has everything from iPods to game consoles to textbooks. It pays by PayPal or check.
