The Google Maps 3.0 update for Android and iOS is one of the biggest updates to the Maps app ever. The update introduces groundbreaking features like Lane guidance in navigation, a feature that was once exclusive to expensive GPS trackers from the likes of TomTom and Gramin.
In urban areas where single lane roads are the norm and where intersections are like a puzzle game, this feature will be really helpful.
There are many other goodies spread across this app update. You get detailed transit stats, Uber integration, and improved search functionality. But many of these features are US-specific, as are new features. But hopefully the testing will be successful and that soon 95% of the world’s population that doesn’t live in the US will have access to it.
Native offline map support
When Google killed Reader, I at least understood why they did it, no matter how narrow the decision (summary: push Google+ to be a news delivery system). But the decision to hide a simple option that lets you download local maps for offline use is confusing. Easter eggs for trivial details, Google. You don’t turn features into easter eggs.
Prior to this update, you had to enter the command “OK Maps” to download local maps. Only thing, this feature isn’t documented anywhere, and if you don’t spend most of your time reading and writing about technology, it’s easy to believe that nothing like it ever existed.
But with the 3.0 update, Google made things right. Now just tap Search (you don’t even need to search for anything), scroll to the bottom of the menu and you’ll find an option highlighted in blue called “Make this map area available offline” “. On iOS 7, it says “Save map for offline use”.
The map area on the screen is now saved and you can refer to it at any time.
Improved search
Search for places and restaurants has been improved in the updated app.
In the iPhone app, you can filter your search results by user ratings. So, for example, choosing 4 stars or more only gets you the best locations (according to user reviews).
Strangely, I can’t find this functionality anywhere in the Android app. If you know anything about it, let me know in the comments.
Restaurant time
Maps now tells you what time restaurants open, because the last thing you want to do is go to a pizza place at 11:02 pm.
When you search for any restaurant, the time of day will be displayed right at the bottom of the card. Select a restaurant and tap More information to see the time for the whole week.
Better map experience
The best map app has gotten so much better. More so if you live in the home country of the NSA. Let us know about your experience with the app in the comments section below.
