Transfer Large Files Between Two Android Devices Quickly

The most convenient file transfer mode between two mobile devices is Bluetooth and we all must have used it at some point in time to transfer music and photos between our phones. However, Bluetooth is only useful when we need to transfer some rather small files (like photos or documents). Since the average file transfer rate is 200 Kbps, transferring a large number of larger sized files can take a long time.

But in today’s fast-paced world, who likes to wait, right? Me neither. So today I will show you how you can transfer files between two Android devices using Wi-Fi direct concept. Yes, we will make it work over Wi-Fi even if there is no hotspot to connect nearby. We will use a versatile file management application called ES File Explorer for the task.

Note: This process may not be supported on older Android devices running on ICS (Android 4.0.4) and below.

Create a Personal Hotspot on Android

So, as I mentioned, we won’t be using any external Wi-Fi hotspot to connect to the device. We will start a hotspot on one of the devices and connect the second Android to that device. To host a Wi-Fi connection, open Android settings and select Than options below Network and Wireless Settings. Here, tap the option Tethering and mobile hotspots (name may be different) and initiate the connection. You can change the SSID name and set a password for added security.

Note: Most tablets that don’t support SIM cards may not find the option to create a personal hotspot as it’s not a necessary feature if you don’t have 3G access on your device.

Transfer files using ES File Explorer

Once you’ve hosted the connection on your Android device, enable Wi-Fi on the second Android phone and connect to the network hosted by the first phone.

Make sure you don’t have a static IP but a dynamic IP in the Wi-Fi settings. Once both devices are connected, it’s time to launch the ES File Explorer app on both devices.

On the Android device where you want to send it, select the file and tap the three-dot menu for more options. You can select as many files as you want and then tap the . icon Send options in the menu. If both devices are connected and you have ES File Explorer open on both devices, you will see the second Android device in the list.

Now all you need to do is tap Send button and the recipient will receive an acceptance message to allow the incoming file transfer. Transfer speeds will be 30 times higher than Bluetooth (about 3 to 5 Mbps) and you can even stream a full HD movie in just a few minutes. In addition, the transfer can be sent to the background and you can also initiate the transfer in parallel with a third Android device.

Note: It doesn’t matter which Android is hosting the connection. Once the devices are connected, you can send and receive files from any device.

Conclusion

I am sure that today I have made your daily life a little easier. Enjoy the trick when your friends ask you to send music videos or movies you have on your mobile, instead of changing the memory card to copy files.
