Windows 10 has a new browser. It’s called Edge and it’s doing surprisingly well so far. Other than the logo, it doesn’t have much in common with what has become an internet meme today – Internet Explorer. The browser was written from the ground up and opens web pages just like Chrome. Aside from the fact that it doesn’t support extensions yet, it’s fine for casual use (which, however, should be avoided by advanced users).
Too long, Bing!
But this is Microsoft’s default browser and it certainly has some special features. Things that don’t usually make sense, but to Microsoft they somehow make sense. And Edge is full of these. From trying to switch to Chrome as your default browser or switching search engines right in Edge. Also, in Edge’s new user interface, in an attempt to simplify things, MS has hidden many settings under an extra layer of interactivity. Useless.
So the default search engine in Edge, as you would expect in a Windows browser, is Bing. That, by itself, isn’t too bad. But it’s not really easy to switch to Google. If you’re tired of searching Bing and want to switch to Google or DuckDuckGo, my personal favorite, read on.

How to Switch Default Search Engine in Edge
So the way it works is that when you visit any website that complies with the search protocols in Edge, it is saved. So, to add a search engine, you need to visit the website first. So go to Edge’s URL bar and type either www.google.com or www.duckduckgo.com.
Step 1: Ok, now click on the three-dot menu button in the top right corner.
Step 2: Now choose Setting.
Step 3: Press View Advanced Settings.
Step 4: In Search in the Address Bar with, select the drop-down menu and click Add new. Side note: I added the search engines once, that’s why they show up in the dropdown. For you, this will be empty.
Step 5: Now, from the next screen, select all the search engines that you want as options. I have used both Google and DuckDuckGo. Here you have an option to directly set the search engine as default by clicking Add as default after selecting the search engine. You can also add it to the list as one of the search providers by clicking Add. Of course, the Remove option will remove the search engine from the list.
Ok, now we’re done.

Although we are all Google fans, I am currently using DuckDuckGo. And if you are a geek, you should also consider it. Yes, they have an outstanding privacy policy. But better they have ! Bangs. These are search modifiers that allow you to quickly search within web pages or perform site searches within DuckDuckGo itself. So if you are looking for an iOS app, type “!appstore app name” and DDG will only show results from the App Store. It’s easy and there are thousands of bangs available for all major sites.
