One of the coolest aspects of the Mac is that it comes with a
number of languages
included by default. That means you can run your Mac in almost any language available. However, the benefits of having multiple languages on your Mac are not limited to that. In fact, this variety also allows you a lot more flexibility in terms of different aspects of your workflow, especially when it comes to entering text.
Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting of these advantages.
Select different languages as input source and switch between them on the fly
Not only can you set up the look and feel of your Mac in a specific language, but you can also switch between languages with a simple keyboard shortcut as you type.
Let’s see how to do this:
First, open System Preferences and then click Language & Text. Then select the Input source navigation.
Scroll through the box on the left and select all the languages (and their variations) that you want to import.
Then under Input source shortcut key click Keyboard shortcuts… and choose a keyboard shortcut to switch between the different input languages you have selected (Command+Option+Space in my case). In the menu bar on your Mac, you should now see Input menu and will be able to see the current language being used.
Change your Mac’s spellcheck language
Let’s say that, like me, you want to keep your Mac’s menus, apps, and overall look and feel in one language (in my case English), but you need to type in another. If you do, you’ll find that the spelling and grammar checker may not work for the language you’re typing in.
Thankfully, the availability of multiple languages in Mac OS X also applies to the system-wide spell checker. All you need to do is ask your Mac to spell check in whatever language/language specific you want.
To do this:
Open System Preferences control panel and click Language & Text.
Then choose Letter tab and search Spell drop-down menu. Click on it and choose Setting… options are at the bottom.
You’ll see a long list of all the languages available on your Mac. Here, make sure to select all the languages you want to work in, including language variations such as different types of English or Portuguese. After selecting them, click Finished button.
Now that you have selected the language you want, go to Spell Go back to the drop-down menu and choose whether you want the spell checker to work with any spell checker or automatically detect the language.
Your go. As you can see, having so many languages available on your Mac really helps. Follow Guiding Tech for more tips like these.
