A Guide to the MS Office Safe Mode and How It Helps

We’ve all accidentally or needlessly entered Windows’ Safe Mode. We also experienced how Windows loads with minimal functionality when in safe mode. The idea behind such a setup is to allow the user to debug and fix problems in the machine that are preventing the machine from booting up normally.

Now, did you know that the MS Office suite has its own safe mode? Yes, it is different from Windows Safe Mode. However, the fundamentals remain the same, and it allows you to do with Office applications what Windows Safe Mode allows you to do with Windows.

Again, the idea here is to start the Office programs that crash (and don’t start properly) so you can debug and fix them.

In safe mode, most features remain disabled. Here are some snapshots from the MS Word program in safe mode.

The most important and usable item that can be opened is Option. This is where you debug various settings and disable customization if needed.

Automatic safety mode

Office programs automatically check for problems and problems when you start them. If they encounter any errors, it will attempt to fix them before launching.

Sometimes it may be necessary to disable the function that is causing the problem. If so, it will ask you first and then do what is needed.

User-initiated safe mode

When automatic safe mode can’t do enough, you must use user-initiated safe mode. Here, you will have to find and fix the problem yourself. The most common place to look for issues is plugins and/or extensions.

But before you start debugging, you must know how to open Office programs in safe mode. We will show you three ways.

Using the Run dialog box: Open the dialog box Run dialog box by pressing Windows key and R simultaneously. Then type winword /safe to launch MS Word in safe mode. For other tools, here are the commands to use:

  • MS Excel: excel/safe
  • MS PowerPoint: powerpnt/safe
  • MS Outlook: outlook/safety

Run Winword Safely

Using the Find Dialog: Commands stay the same, except that you type them in Search box as shown below.

Safe Winword Search

Use the Ctrl key: Locate any MS Office file or application shortcut. Then double click it while holding the . button Control key. Before proceeding to launch the app in safe mode, it will ask for confirmation.

Ctrl WinWord is safe

Note: To exit safe mode, simply close the app you have open. Then start the application in the normal way.

Conclusion

Being aware of safe mode on the MS Office suite is really helpful. Sometimes programs just fail at startup for no apparent reason. Safe mode should at least get you through. And then you can debug some things; disable third-party plugins/plugins, remove templates from external sources, disable macros, etc
