How To Wake Up Your Android Phone Just By Picking It Up

With Google Now, you can talk to your phone. If you’re using a Nexus 5, Moto X, or have Google Now Launcher installed, you don’t even need to tap any buttons to start chatting. It’s a small piece of the future that we carry around in our pockets. We’re a long way from Minority Report-style interactions but there’s one more cool thing from the future that you can bring in a little early.

Turn on the screen just by picking up the phone.

Ok, it’s not really fancy, it might even sound stupid. But it is cool. More than that, it’s very useful.

Activate WakeUp

WakeUp is the application that we will use to do this. Install the app from the Play Store and open it up. Before you start, you need to do three things.

First, touch Enable device administrator and on the next screen, tap Activated.

Second, go to widgets and set Awaken 1×1 widget on any home screen.

Finally, touch Start automatic monitoring button. This will allow the app to run in the background and listen for your hand movements. More on what it means below.

How it works

You need to pick up the phone from a flat position and turn your wrist slightly towards you. Or just select it straight until about 75 degrees.

You will feel a vibration when the phone is in the position it needs to turn on the screen. Bringing the phone to a flat state turns the screen off again (only if you’re still on the lock screen).

How does it not work

The part that curves or picks up straight is important. Tilting or turning the phone from side to side doesn’t work nor does it vibrate (but turning the phone upside down does).

That’s fine because my biggest worry before testing it was that the app would unnecessarily wake up the screen and drain battery while it was in my pocket. But in my testing, that hasn’t happened yet.

What does it eat

After you allow the app to auto-monitor, the app will run in the background and stay in the notification drawer to do its job.

But it will only do so for 30 minutes. If you want to increase (or decrease) this time limit, you need to upgrade to the Pro app ($3). But if you don’t do this, it can be a kind of blessing in the cheap.

Because the app is running in the background continuously, it will drain the battery. That’s just the way it works. In my experience, there hasn’t been a big jump but if it does, I’ll be the first to update you on it.

So keep the 30 minute limit. Once that limit is crossed you will need to use the power key to unlock and then you should be fine in 30 minutes. This seems to be a good compromise between functionality, battery life and money.

Nothing is perfect

Neither does this app. You’ll see it light up at times you don’t want it to. That’s the thing about life in the future when you’re simply not there yet. There will be transition problems.
