How to Look Up the Specs of Your Mac Online

It’s easy to get detailed information about a working Mac using the Macintosh System Report. If your Mac won’t boot up or isn’t accessible, you have a few other ways to look up most specs with help from Apple.

If you’ve registered your product with Apple with your Apple ID, they keep a history of all your interactions with them. Apple calls this your Support Profile. It’s a little scary at first, but it’s also great!

You’ll need your handy Apple ID, password, and two-factor device (if applicable) to view your support profile. Go to http://supportprofile.apple.com and enter your Apple ID. If you have two-factor authentication enabled, confirm your information there.

Once you’ve confirmed who you are, you’ll see a list of any products purchased or registered with your Apple ID. Click on that device and you will get the serial number along with the computer and model. We’ll figure out how to use that model notation to get the possible specs of that computer.

If you haven’t registered your Apple product, or if it hasn’t been registered for you, there’s a workaround. However, you will need your computer’s serial number. Go to Apple Support page and look for Service & Support Coverage Check. Currently, it’s at the bottom of the page.

Follow that link and enter your serial number and captcha. Then you will get the correct model designation. From there you can look at the typical specs of that model.

Look up your exact Mac model

Once you know which model your Mac belongs to, you need to learn the typical specs for that model. Apple keeps a full database of this on support.apple.com. Find Specifications at the bottom of the screen. Select the item and select Browse by product. Next, you will get a search window. Go ahead and enter your model specifier from earlier and click search.

From there, Apple will show you a list of matching models. Choose one that fits your model and has your specifications. This tool cannot look up the exact specs of a particular Mac. If the hard drive or RAM is changed after shipping, the online tools will not know this information.

In most cases, System Report gives you precise details about your Mac. If it fails to boot or is not handy, these options are a good alternative. It’s great to know if your Mac has been stolen and you must report the details to the police or your insurance company.
