How To Use The Flight Simulator In Google Earth

Google Earth has a great but lesser known flight simulation feature that uses it so you can fly the plane and virtually experience the difficulty levels and technical aspects involved in flying the plane.

Below are the basic steps to run the flight simulator.

Obviously, you’ll need to have the latest version of Google Earth installed on your computer to get started.

1. Go to Tools->Enter Flight Simulator to start. You can also use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+A).

2. The Flight Simulator window will open. Select aircraft (F16 or SR22). For the first flight, I prefer to choose SR22 because of the lower speed compared to other flights.

Google adds some of the most beautiful airports in the world to the list. Select the airport from the drop-down menu and click the “Start Flight” button.

You can also use the joystick to control the aircraft (If available, tick the option below).

3. Here’s yours. You can take off your flight with the help of keys on the keyboard. You can also enable mouse control by clicking the left mouse button.

4. You can see some random numbers appear on the screen. Here are some basic terms that pilots need to know when flying an airplane.

Terms used are Aileron, Altitude (feet above sea level), Tilt angle, Lift, Escape flight simulation, Wing and gear indicator, Heading, Tilt (degrees), Rudder, Speed (knot), Throttle, Vertical speed (feet per minute).

For novice users, it can take some time to learn the operation (I crashed a few times). Here’s a quick tip for you:

Increase thrust by pressing the “Page up” button on your keyboard. After a while, as the plane accelerates, use the down arrow key to take off your flight. After reaching a certain height, release the button. You can now rotate your plane left and right using the arrow keys respectively.

Note that the keys are very sensitive which means use the keys slowly or your plane will crash. Once you get a decent level of flying, you can use different keyboard controls.

Overall, it’s a fun tool to use and a must try if you have Google Earth installed.
