Without a doubt, the average screen size on smartphones is getting out of control. With the latest offerings from stock Android manufacturers reaching nearly 7 inches in size, navigating the user interface with one hand can be quite daunting. Samsung has integrated a dedicated one-handed mode in One UI to solve this problem. Here’s how you can use one-handed mode on your Samsung Galaxy phone.
As the name suggests, the one-handed mode is designed to let you use the phablet with ease. When one-handed mode starts, the operating system minimizes the entire screen to allow you to use the same user interface comfortably. Check the add-on in action. Shall we?
Activate one-handed mode with gestures
There are two ways to navigate the OS in One UI. You can use the age-old navigation buttons (Home, Recent, and Back) or select gestures to move around the UI.
If you’re using gestures, just swipe down at the bottom center and One UI will go into one-handed mode.
You will see a floating UI with a background that matches the background in the gradient theme.
If you’re left-handed, you can tap the left arrow and switch one-handed mode to the left, and similarly, tap the right arrow to switch to the opposite direction.
There is no way to resize one-handed mode. However, you can adjust the window position using the top bar. Press and hold on the top bar. Then use drag and drop to move the window around.
If you are using the navigation button in your Galaxy phone, we recommend using the Home button trick to use one-handed mode. You’ll need to make some settings tweaks here.
We’ll first show you how to revert back to the navigation buttons to move around the UI and then make settings changes in one-handed mode.
Step 1: Open the Settings menu on your Galaxy phone.
Step 2: Go to Display.
Step 3: Scroll down and select Navigation bar.
Step 4: From the Navigation Type menu, select Button. From the same menu, you can also change the button order.
After One UI changes from gesture to navigation button, you can follow the steps below.
Step 1: Swipe down and bring up the notification center.
Step 2: Select the Settings gear at the top.
Step 3: From the Settings menu, navigate to Advanced Features.
Step 4: Select One-handed Mode and touch the Button.
From now on, you can double-tap the Home button to enable one-handed mode. The usual one-handed mode features remain identical, as discussed above.
Exit One-handed Mode
It’s pretty easy to get out of one-handed mode. You need to double-tap the side arrow and One UI will return to the original interface.
Note that when you take screenshots in one-handed mode, they will go full screen to reveal the gradient background. You should always exit one-handed mode and then take a screenshot.
Turn off one-handed mode
If you don’t like Samsung’s one-handed mode, you can easily turn it off from the Settings menu. Some people also disable this function when they get tired of accidentally activating one-handed mode often.
Step 1: Open Settings on your phone.
Step 2: Go to Advanced Features.
Step 3: Disable One-handed mode toggle and you’re good to go.
Bonus tip: Use multiple windows in one UI
A user interface full of features and hidden gems. One such trick is to use multiple windows from the Recent menu. You will have a floating application window on the screen and you can minimize the application to a bubble and access it from anywhere.
Step 1: Open the multitasking menu on your phone.
Step 2: Long press on the app icon and select the Open in pop-up view option.
Step 3: You will see One UI opening the application in a small window. You can tap the top bar and place the application windows in your preferred positions.
Tap the top indicator and you will find options to minimize or expand the application window. It is not recommended to use this function on phones with 4GB RAM. Multi-window will need a good amount of RAM to work smoothly for a long period of time.
