How to Find Password of Wi-Fi Network in Mac OS X – Guiding Tech

Find Mac Wi-Fi PasswordOne of the best things about being an internet entrepreneur and running a blog (the page you’re reading) for a living is that I can work almost anywhere with internet, or more precisely, a Wi- Fi that I can connect to. ARRIVE. This freedom has made me jump from cafe to cafe, the ones with free Wi-Fi, of course. It also means I’ve got a list of wireless networks saved on my Mac that automatically connects me to the Wi-Fi of a place I’ve visited before.

While I don’t need to bother about Wi-Fi passwords once they’re up and running, I may need to see them from time to time (like when I need to share that password). You don’t expect me to miss them, do you?

So this post is about finding the password of the Wi-Fi network stored in your Mac. Unlike in Windows where you can go directly to Property of that particular network and make it show the password, things are a bit different on OS X versions.

Here are the steps to get your Mac to show the Wi-Fi password.

Step 1: Note the name of the network by clicking the Wi-Fi icon. Obviously this is a network you’ve connected to or have connected to in the past.

Step 2: Enter Bright spot by pressing Command + Space bar and typing Keychain. Keychain is a utility built into Macs and does the job of storing passwords system-wide.

Step 3: Open Keychain Access and you should see that network listed somewhere. If you can’t find it at a glance, try searching for it using the search bar at the top. In my case it was right at the top of the list.

Step 4: Right click on that list and click Receive information. You can choose to copy the password to the clipboard and then paste it into TextEdit to make it visible, but if you just want a quick look at the password, you can do it right here.

Step 5: Now you will need to click Show password checkbox in the pop-up box.

Step 6: Keychain will ask you for your administrator password before it can show you the password of that particular network. Enter password, click Allow and voila, your password will appear in no time!

That’s how you can easily reveal the password of the Wi-Fi network you’ve used on your Mac. Veteran OS X users won’t find anything special about this, but those who have just switched to Mac or have been using it for a long time without knowing Keychain will find it useful.
