The Android ecosystem is known for its customizability. One such aspect is the Lock Screen customization and add-ons, including widgets, Always On Display, notifications, etc. Samsung, as the leader of Android, has not spared any difficulty. It’s a pain to pack the latest Galaxy devices with lots of lock screen customization features. With the latest One UI 3.1, the Korean giant just doubled down with more features than ever before.
All mid-range and high-end Samsung smartphones have AMOLED screens, which means they can take advantage of the Always On Display function. Taking a page from Apple’s book, Samsung also introduced lock screen widgets on One UI 3.1. Let’s learn about all the lock screen customization possibilities on Samsung Galaxy devices.
Turn On Always On Display
To extend battery life on Galaxy devices, Samsung disables the AOD function as soon as it ships. However, it is a useful add-on to quickly see the time, date, remaining battery life, notifications, etc. Follow the steps below to enable AOD on Samsung devices.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your phone.
Step 2: Scroll down to the Lock screen section.
Step 3: Enable the Always On Display option.
Customize Always On Display
The default AOD style is the most basic. However, it’s a user interface. Everything is personalized here. Samsung has come up with dozens of AOD customization options to create the perfect experience for you. Follow the steps below to customize AOD on Galaxy devices.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your phone.
Step 2: Scroll down to the Lock screen section.
Step 3: Click the Always On Display option.
Step 4: Here you can show scheduled AOD, enable music display info, etc
The most useful add-on is the Clock style. Tap on it and you can access a variety of clock and calendar styles with different color effects. We also like how Samsung offers to play with gradient colors.
Move to photo option and you can add gif image as AOD or select photo from gallery to add to lock screen. In short, you have all the customization options to create an ideal AOD display.
Download AOD from Theme Store
Still not satisfied with the AOD options available? Download some third-party options from the default Samsung Theme Store. Follow the steps.
Step 1: Long press on One UI home screen and select Themes.
Step 2: Scroll to the AODs menu.
Step 3: You will see both free and paid AOD.
Samsung has organized them neatly based on certain categories. You should have no trouble finding the right AOD for your lock screen.
Note: Before you continue, download those nifty gifs as your AOD on your device. Let us warn you about the possible impact on your device’s battery life. You will notice a typical reduction in battery life of about 20%-30% after implementing AOD.
More lock screen widget
Like the iOS 14 lock screen widget, Samsung is adding widgets to the lock screen. You need to enable them from the Settings menu.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your phone.
Step 2: Scroll down to the Lock screen section.
Step 3: Select Widgets from the following screen.
Here you will see the default lock screen widgets to add to the lock screen. The current list includes Music, Weather, Today’s Schedule, Next Alarm, Digital Wellbeing, and Bixby Routines. One can also allow widgets to show on Always On Display.
Tap Reorder at the top and you can reposition widgets based on your preferences.
Lock your Galaxy device and you won’t find any lock screen widgets right away. You need to double tap the watch to see the widgets without unlocking the phone. Our most used widgets are Music, Weather and Digital Wellbeing.
So far, lock screen widgets have been limited to Samsung’s first-party apps. We hope the company will release the necessary APIs for developers to implement widgets for the lock screen.
Add contact info to the lock screen
Samsung allows you to display information such as a phone number or email address on your Lock screen so that you can be reached if you lose your phone. It’s handy and we recommend everyone at least add an email ID.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your phone.
Step 2: Scroll down to the Lock screen section.
Step 3: Find the Contact Info option, tap it, and add text.
Customize your lock screen like a pro
Follow the steps above and completely personalize the lock screen experience on your Galaxy device. Hopefully Samsung improves the experience in upcoming One UI updates. What’s your favorite lock screen addition? Share in the comments below.
