Automatically Turn on Philips Hue Lights When You Wake Up

Philips Hue lights are more than just light bulbs that you can control from your smartphone. They can get a lot of functionality from third-party apps. Once that feature is the ability to automatically turn on when you wake up (or turn off when you go to sleep.)

This feature only works half way with the official Philips Hue app as you can set the time to trigger certain lights to turn on, off or dim. But it works even better when paired with your actual alarm clock app or Fitbit so the lights come on exactly when you wake up. They can even fade out if you want.

Use sleep cycle

If you use your iPhone or Android phone as your alarm clock in the morning, the Sleep Cycle app can link to your Philips Hue lights. In addition to being a good all-round alarm clock that tracks your sleep patterns and wakes you up at the optimal time, a premium feature can automatically turn on your Philips Hue lights when you wake up. Even better, it can slowly turn them on at full brightness in the lead up to your alarm going off.

Clap Setting in the Sleep Cycle app and scroll to choose Philips Hue. Turn it on, then press the button on your Hue Bridge to link to the app. Now that Sleep Cycle has access to your lights, you can see all your preferences.

First, touch lamp to select the lights you want to turn on or off according to your sleep schedule. Next adjust the brightness slider to your liking.

When you go to sleep, you can choose to turn off the lights instantly or smartly. If you choose Immediately, they will go off as soon as you set the alarm. Select Smart will turn them off when you fall asleep.

Then, in the morning, the lights can turn on slowly before waking as described earlier or right after waking up.

Final Energy saving setting will turn off the light after waking up. You can turn this off to keep the lights on, or choose 20 minutes, 60 minutes, or right after the alarm stops.

Using IFTTT

If you don’t want to use the Sleep Cycle alarm app with your Philips Hue lights, you can always use IFTTT to adjust your sleep schedule instead. For instance, if you have a Fitbit that tracks your sleep, you can trigger a recipe to turn on the light when you wake up.

Or if you’re on a very consistent schedule, you can just set the time for your Hue lights to come on every morning. Even let them flash to remind you when you’re about to be late for work. The possibilities are endless with IFTTT.

Browse the recipes available on IFTTT or create your own. Just make sure you connect to the necessary channels, and for the purposes of this article, connect to your Philips Hue lights.
