How to Type Spanish Words and Accents By Changing Keyboard Layout

If you remember our article on name pronunciation, we talked about how certain names, such as José, are pronounced differently. We’ve covered pronunciation for now, but how do you actually type these spanish accents on your keyboard? How do you get that accent to appear on the “e” in “José” ?

People who have played with computers for a long time will know that you can really type anything if you know the corresponding cryptographic codes (such as Alt + 0233 to pass the ‘e’). But this is not the most efficient way to do it. And it doesn’t work in all keyboards either.

So we are going to talk about changing your keyboard layout to US – International so you can easily type the spanish characters mentioned above. And don’t worry this won’t “change” your keyboard. Just a small change is reversible.

Here are the steps for Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

1. Type intl.cpl in the start search bar and press enter (or go to Control Panel –>Region and Language) .

2. You will get the following “Region and Language” window. Click the Keyboard and Language tab.

Religion and language

3. Click Change keyboard.

Our keyboard layout

The US International keyboard layout is slightly different from the English (US) layout. For example, your single quote key won’t work until you press the spacebar along with it. Same for quotes. You need to type Shift + double quote key + space bar to get quotes.

Apart from the above two differences, there are not any other major changes, except of course the ability to type Spanish accents. Here’s how you can type them now.

  • a = ‘ + a
  • í = ‘ + me
  • o = ‘ + o
  • é = ‘ + e
  • ú = ‘ + u
  • đ = ~ + n
  • ü = ” + u

That’s it. Simple and easy. (Courteous image – Wikimedia )
